hey

Just getting ready to load up a 12" tapped horn design that's based around Tony W's  FTH12 design.

He originally designed it around the Celestion FTR12-4080HDX, but then changed it to Faital Pro 12HP1020 (mostly because of a falling out with Celestion from the thread). Both are similar enough in price that I can choose.

The celestion has 300w more power, but the Faital has a mill more X-max, and I feel I'll probably be reaching Xmax before any sort of thermal/power problems. Faital is also lighter, which is a bonus but not a deal breaker by any means.

However they're similar enough that sound will be the primary deciding factor. Don't suppose anyone has been able to compare both drivers in a similar design and can share some thoughts on what the found?

Spec sheets for the drivers show differing calculations for Xmax
Celestion -  Xmax  (voice coil winding width-gap depth)/2.
Faital  -  Xmax (voice coil winding width-gap depth)/2. + (gap depth / 3)
Calculate the Faital xmax as celestion did and you have 5mm not 9mm
Faital x damage is 16mm can't see x damage spec for the Celestion.

Very good point, only had a cursory look at the spec sheets, didn't think to check that.

Think it seems I'm leaning towards the celestion anyway for stock/availability reasons, so if it has both higher xmax and power handling then unless someone is able to say the Faital sounds noticeably better then it may well be decision made.
