The problem with inverters isn't with low powered stuff with almost constant current draw. For that inverters are actually quite efficient. Usally about 90% but you have to add the conversion loss in the 230V appliances as well, so total you should probably just add 20% or so to the power consumption. The problem is with amplifier and other high power variable loads like lighting is that the inverter in this case "sets" itself for a much higher constant current draw than the actual average power consumption, so efficinecy can drop as low as 65%, and with the add conversion in appliances that can account for up to 40% added power consumption. So buy as small an inverter as possible, since efficiency is best when power consumption is about 80% of the rated capacity, for all your low power appliances if it's not possible to run them directly on 12/24V, and run your lighting and amplifiers directly on 12/24V. |

Got two batteries,
one 115 Ah running pure sine wave inverter, 2x CDj200 and DJM300 mixer take around 40 watts. Had it running off battery for 10 hours and there was still some power left. "Big rig" running 4x tripath amps takes 4-5amperes. 110Ah battery lasts for good 10 hours, solar panel helps too. |

Here is a picture of the Porta Party @ Bearded Theory last weekend. We've rebuilt it and made it louder which means we can command our own dance floor cutting out bleed from the other stages.....apart from if you're the DJ which is a little annoying but essential to keep power consumption to a minimum

At that time it was 600w on bass, 900w on mid top. All rms. Bass was run from a switchmode Class D amp at 4r with 1.8kw on tap. Tops were run from a Class GH amp at 4r. Battery was a 120ah high end Deep Cycle SLA. Run time was 4hrs at full, 6 hours at Critical Mass Volume, Almost a full day at mates down the park level, and near a week on television duties lol. That was about 3 or 4 years ago now (ah those were the days...). It was designed purely for Critical Mass but ended getting used for a lot of things including promo work and festivals.

We were also the only system allowed to carry on playing into the SOCPA zone as it sounded good lol. And most of the time the coppers would give requests.
