You haven't read the full thread then ;)
There's several different designs on this.
The modular halfinator. Basically just cut in half but with electronics in one part, and a passive extra one that clips on with butterfly locks. Or two active parts.
Then there's the pro/signature version with Eminence Basslite S2010s instead of HP10Ws.
Then there's using lithium batteries instead of SLAs. Or using plastic film solar cells instead of glass substrate, and so on.
The version I'm taking to Roskilde this year plays louder than the original version because of larger amp and more sensitive drivers. Size is the same but it will weigh only half at 11-12kg compared to to the 25kg of the original. Weigh will depend on whether I'll have 1 or 2 10Ah batteries inside for 12V or 24V operation (each 10Ah 12.8V LFP cell weighs 1 kg).

Well. I beg to differ. And as you said you haven't heard the Boominator. I almost guarentee you that when you hear one, you will completely reverse your opinion on that matter.
It sounds strange but you will be convinced that a bipolar will actually sound like it has less "sound spill" as you put it than a regular speaker. Edited by Saturnus - 08 February 2012 at 3:41pm |

I forgot to mention that there is naturally a way to make the Boominator work more like a monopole. You could insert a switch that both turn off the "back side" piezos while inserting a filter coil to the woofers. The coil should be as low resistance as you can afford and should have an x-o at somewhere between 300 and 600 Hz. Remember that at the same time you must insert a resistor on the "front side" woofers of exactly the same resistance as the filter coil. This is to ensure that the two drivers don't get different Qts and therefore would work against eachother instead of supplementing eachother. Basically the "back side" woofer will only work as an added bass speakers when the switch is thrown. It's not a mod I'd recommend but it's doable. Happy experimenting. |
