Just found a rather cool addition to my speaker system.
The whole thing is meant to be as  cheap as possible but for £2.70 I really couldn't resist.

I plan to mount them under the lip above each set of speakers so they provide coloured downlighting. And because they are both 12V, I can just wire them in series for a 24V supply.

It actually sounds pretty good and i'm pleased with the volume so far. Unfortunately I havent been able to run it at max for more than a few seconds due to having a fair few neighbours who I doubt would appreciate it. :(

Still distorting a little at the top levels. I need to experiment with a different input source to determine of it's the ipod or the amp that's distorting.

I'm headed off to uni next weekend and i'm trying to decide if it's worth bringing with me. It would be storing it once i'm there that would be difficult as i'm in halls.

Tested the system in the car yesterday and it fits flat in the boot perfectly. Very useful for getting it around.

I have now added a grille on the front (offcut piece of mesh I for got free Smile ) and a handle. Unfortunately my original idea for a solid bar on the top would have made it too big to fit in the car so I made do with some rope and a piece of hose.

For some reason the image scaling seems to have done something odd to the mesh.

Another update:

I've just finished painting the case and i'm pretty pleased with the results. The only colour I had a lot of was pink and not wanting a completely pink creation, I got a black, silver, blue and pink one :P

Still do do:
 - Add handle(s) for wheeling along and lifting
 - Add mesh on front to stop damage to speakers/them falling out
 - Build pre-amp
 - Obtain 2 x 12V batteries + charger
 - Make 'power box' to house batteries in (containing fuse, switch and LED)

yeah, tone controls worked well, sound was clean too. heat was warm at most, the case did a good job of acting as the heatsink Thumbs Up

aye, a small 2.1 board would be perfect - you can do pretty much that by combining the 41hz kits though.....

Ah - right. I like em to stay - not go. Did the tone controls work OK ? Anything much in the way of heat when run full welly for a while ?

Lepai name has another 12V amplifier -

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170536814188&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

Now if the quality were to be OK, these would suit my agenda _really_ well .... option to use additional sub-woofer. But I read a few not too complimentary things in some forum somewhere about them .... going titties upside. Also - its not a Tripath-based design - some Sanyo IC amp I think ...

If only they could come up with a good, reliable, TA2020-based, 2.1 configuration .......

But yeah - anyone claiming 550W for wahts basically about 15-20W/channel ..... <Jeremy Paxman voice = ON> nnyyyyiiiiizzzz .....

It'd waste a little juice - but very little. I guess it'd depend on the pre-amp's current consumption - most likely in the region of 50mA or less I should think. The apparent physical size of their PCB looks like it would integrate into a suitable-sized case/enclosure.

But for me (I have a encased TA2020 amplifier) it'd be a bit awkward wrt. power and casing.
Plus .... I could get a Lepai TA2020 amplifier as in :-

.... has tone controls + stated sensitivity of 200mV (should be good for ipod etc.) and a fairly sensible set of connectors.

Has anyone used one of these ? Love to know ....

yes, i have

mine didnt do so well .. a bit of the case of chinese watts then it 'went' one day Ermm

not bad value though

I'd go for something more like this :-

Yeah, I did notice distortion on the top end. I wasnt sure if it was from the ipod or the fact that I was only running it on 12V.

I have a little 9V maplins mixer that I run from a 9V battery which seems to boost the signal somewhat, however it would be nice to have something that works from 24V (or 12V).

A quick google has thrown up this: http://seanm.ca/stomp/preamp.html
What do people think? Would it be a suitable pre-amp?
