ive built a pair of these cabs, loaded with p-audio c15 600EL (driver recommended to me by blue aran)
they were the first proper cabs i built and i didnt know much back then so i havent checked to see if the driver is suited to the cab, but ive had them 4 years now and they still sound good. Plenty of kick bass in there but they dont drop that low.

tom I was thinking of building 4 selenium hb1505d1 to go underneath 2 EM15's, do you reckon a group of 4 will hit 40hz?
Check out the response with kappa 15lf - Sorry random on this thread but its a very similar design

I reckon you will hit 40hz with 4 of the double 15" cabs but thats 8x 15" drivers, you could do better building 4x 18" bass cabs instead, they are likely to hit 40hz the ease.
What kind of music do you play?

plenty of bassline, fidget, electro, but also some ragga jungle/dnb and hardtek. Free party rig but doing more and more nights and want a proffessional sounding system. I have been looking into 18" cabs but i also have to fit this all into the back of my van (same size as a t4 pretty much) so not sure 4x 18" cabs would fit and so looking into these 15" instead. I can modify the design so they fit perfectly under my em15's in 1 solid stack which would be ideal cus it will look the bee's! I think if i can hit 50hz it should be alright as we're never playing much music that needs to go super low and if like you say these 15" designs still kick out a fair amount of bass im happy even if i dont hit 40hz :)

i see your problem, i take it you have worked out that the selenium design fits perfectly into your van? (dont forget the wheel arches get in the way!
 )If this design fits and your EM15s will fit on top then its got to be the way to go but if it was me i would be looking a for a little more low end. I think the selenium's will have to be stacked in one big horn mouth to get your 40hz and with em15s on top plus mid tops, thats going to be one tall thin stack. Do you have to use folded horns for bass? you could do better with ported horns or subs depending on what you want to do with your rig? Look here for some different designs to the usual suspects.. what frequency are you going to cross the subs to kicks? i assume around 100hz?
What mid tops are you looking at using just out of interest? |

No havn't worked out the size of my van but i know from past experience that 4 more cabinets ontop of my em15's, 12" mid flares, and 12" tops (soon to be mt121's) will only just fit in the van so cant be too much bigger than the em15's (i've fitted 4 em15's + the mids and tops in before with a ton of room so if the selenium folded horn is similar size then it will fit nicely).
Basicly I was thinking 4 of these folded horns (im looking for long throw basicly) stacked on their side 2 wide 2 high with mouths together, with 2 em15's stacked 2 wide on their sides ontop, and my mid cabinets ontop (which are same size as the em15's) so its all one stack. Have worked it all out on sketchup (I'l get a photo up in a minute from my laptop) and the mids will be about 1.80 from the ground so perfect height really! I'm just trying to decide on a design that will A) stack nicely underneath the em15's (similar sort of size) B) long throw C) ideally play low in a stack of 4 But the cost difference of buying 4 18" compared to 4 kappa's (and also having to sell and re-buy a more powerful amp) is whats putting me off.. What other long throw designs have you seen that are relatively compact/use cheaper drivers?

I thought we have been talking double loaded 15" horns? Thats why i thought the stack was going to be tall and thin! Your pic and measurements show single 15" horns  The cabs i built were from the design posted on page one, are you using that? or...Are you looking at making half cabs of the above design?
To be honest i cant think of many at all, the selenium 15" horns seem to be the only horns in this category at the moment...unless someone knows any different? Looks good anyway stick with that if you cant find anything else to compare too. Edited by Tocooltom - 08 June 2012 at 9:59am |

Comparing the p-audio driver and the kappa 15lf it looks like the Kappa is a better driver? Other than the p-audio being 1200w and the kappa 600w. The kappa has 99db sensitivity compared to 96db. Qts and Qes value's are lower in kappa. As is useable frequency range etc.. I've got some kappa's here so i will build an mdf model soon and see :)

These are the drivers i used in my cabs....
You must have been looking at this.. I think they are the new model, i built my cabs and loaded them 4 years ago
