If it sounds like a gorilla is trying to escape, turn it down.

Do the sums 4000+2000+say 600W+100W for DJ tatt + lamps that-s 6K7W in speaker power, your amps aren't 100% efficient so assume you need a supply of about 1.5x the cab power min.
I never use anything less than 25KVA for PA, but if you must, get a genset that at least equals the badge power of you amps....

Any generator will power it all up and allow for some noise at a low level. Where it will fail is when you turn up the volume loud and the generator is overwhelmed on every bass line. It sounds horrible. You will have to then turn off all of the lights, and also turn the volume down until the horribleness is inaudible, and know that the generator is still being stressed beyond spec. Its not safe for your gear or the generator.
Don't let the generator be your limiting factor. Also, I always try to use a separate generator or at least a separate circuit for lights. Some lights cause noise in the sound gear.

what amps you're using would be more of a consideration than what speakers.
decent small (about 6kva diesel) can do ok on a usable system for a party if that's all you can get.. but i wouldn't go any loweror mess about with little petrol ones. and as others have said a 15kva or so can be hired for not much more. |

Not yet included is the use of a static Load, say four 500W Par Cans which are left on for the full time that the Gen-set is running.
Plus the very necessary AVR so that you have a good chance of having a fairly stable supply voltage... See other threads on the same topic on here for more information. Hope this assists and good luck with your event whilst hoping that you don't get any equipment failures Mik |

It's not about the wattage of your drivers as such, it's about the power draw from the power amplifiers. Look at the spec sheet of your amplifiers and see what amps (A) they do. You multiply the amps to the voltage to work out the kVA (kilovolts to amps). So A * V (240v is standard for UK). This will work out the maximum power that the amplifiers can draw out. For example my TA2400 is 13A therefore 13A * 240v = 3120kVA.
