Your best shout is to emulate XP using a VM on windows 7 or higher. Works fine in that. It is not so much the instruction set of the CPU, more the instruction set supported by the OS. Akabak is a 16 bit program.

Virtual machine.

Or you could make a bootable memory stick and put 32 bit xp or 98 on it.

I can confirm it works fine with the standard Microsoft emulation VM, which if you have an XP serial is easily installed in windows 7 or above

I've just got a new computer with Windows10 Pro which is 64-bit.

any way to run Akabak without getting hold of an XP serial number and all this palaver:

It will yeah, up to you how you go about that. You can buy OEM serial keys for any version of Windows for about £30 tops though.

not tried Akabak but been able to run various legacy windows apps in linux mint / wine, including those that don't work in win7 / compatibility mode or as a VM in virtualbox. To run a 16 bit app you'll need a 32 bit wine prefix, and as wine is under regular development I'd recommend a dev release from wineHQ if wine supplied with your distro doesn't work.

can I install a linux (ubuntu) virtual machine on my Windows10 PC and then run Wine from Linux? Or do I just need to pay for an old windows installation?

Akabak-ception

For all the ballache of doing that, I'd just pay £15 for an OEM XP license serial
