I had one of their earlier ones, the xlr version, the "bass contour" control didnt seem to do anything more than than turning up the bass on your mixer would. It was a waste of money to my ears, but maybe i wasnt using it correctly?
Be seeing you.

They are an effect, if they provide the effect you are after that is good. I've yet to find an occasion when it does anything useful and am of the opinion they sound best when turned off and bypassed.

Last weekends Gig with BBE turned off.

I've got one too, but only for sparkling/subbing up particularly dead/thin sounding instruments, like a crap sounding acoustic guitar.
I also use it to snazz up a korg MS10, which works quite well.

But according to that review it's solely an equaliser, just like to one on your desk channel. Do you feel it does something the desk EQ doesn't?

Definitely sounds different to an EQ.
it's more like it adds space & depth to the bass & tops.
Only where they're missing already though.

I could do a demo if you like? soundcloud it, or Vimeo it or something?

I recall in 1994, purchasing a BBE Sonic Maximiser. Within five minutes of trying it on my system, I realised I wasted my money. It works well for bass bins that have difficulty delivering frequencies @ 50 Hz in addition to, high frequency drivers that begin to decline above 8 kHz.

I ended up using it as a level meter for even in a “flat setting” it offered frequencies I did not want. I might add it reduced the dB level my low midrange as well.

It was a learning experience on my behalf to rent or borrow audio equipment and try it on my system before literally buying it brand new in the box.

Best Regards,
