If it sounds like a gorilla is trying to escape, turn it down.

They do work from around 3.5k but i wouldnt cross them that low to be honest.
And yes a very very simple high pass and L-pad wouldnt put any undue load on the same channel as your mids. |

...dont let any one talk you into 'they have to be motorola' they dont sound any bloody different.
I use to have a box of 4 sitting above a cheap stack of cheap cheap speakers and they add a nice little bit of top end (even if the rest of my stack at the time sounded like it was playing underwater... in the thames river) Edited by mini-mad - 27 March 2015 at 10:39am |

Back in the day I used to use them above double 15s, so you can imagine what that sounded like. But I was a teenager and somewhat 'funds limited' |

Absolutely. Although I think at some point I did graduate to a Berry analog Xover but if I recall that was subs and tops so the piezos were still just wired in parallel. Not even a series cap. It probably helped that they were motorolas but I did many gigs with them and a lot of people enjoyed it. Hey ho. Makes you appreciate the good stuff when you get it.

Indeed, that brings back some memories, I can remember the first time I swapped out a load of piezos for a proper comp driver and horn and thought 'bloody hell, where did all that come from!' Although I have to agree, piezos do have their uses when used correctly. I've still got a box of them in the garage I think.

I was listening last night to a pair of Maplin pro sound wonders on sticks, so without a doubt piezos. at lower volume they actually sounded quite good for the price point. Turned up a bit though and it started to sound rather bad very quickly. Love the way piezos basically turn everything into a snare.
Didn't matter a lot though, whole pub full of people have a lot of fun. A bigger and better rig would only have brought noise complaints. |
