Mornin all.

I've one of these P Audio Coax drivers to make a DJ Monitor.
I was wondering if there would be any mileage to explore making a small scoop enclosure for it to increase the low end?
Could this be a fun experiment or a waste of time?
To be honest I don't know what the preferred driver characteristics would be for a Scoop.

I'd love to know what ye all think.

My Tinnitus is coming along nicely!!

With co-axil speakers, you do have to be aware of application, small horns on the front don't lend themselves to large PA systems, but monitors are fine. In the early days you will discover that the JBL Scoop was used in two way systems on many occasions, and having a Direct Radiator section should easily reach a horn, although that has already been decided by the Manufacturer. Balance may be affected by the slight increase in Bass, but I can't see that being a problem.

Morning,

There are some mixed reviews about these coaxes(P-audio Coax) but i guess you already own them so no point in discussing that now...

There are many people that use 12" scoops in Hifi applications but i a am worried that your driver might run out of x-max in a situation when the "artist" decides to set the monitor volume to 11.
Anyways, here is a 12" scoop plan 12 - 15 scoop hope some people who are more knowledgeable on the scoop subject will chime in.

Great lads, thanks!...the artist will be me so I'll be very wary of the '11' setting!

I am not saying don't do it. It is worth an experiment, but as said before, don't push it too hard.

My suggestion would be to sort of plan ahead for next step. If you go to the effort of making a scoop, you may eventually want to use it to its full potential, and then you will want to put in a proper scoop driver. And then the coaxial, if you keep it from getting damaged can be put into a proper monitor enclosure, where it will probably sound better and be more convenient for its purpose. The scoop will be heavy, and it will not be good on a pole. A scoop sounds best floor loaded, which is not convenient for near field dj monitoring.

Thanks b grade.
I modeled a box on winisd but when I made  it it was lacking low end, I've probably got the volume a bit small.
I know it's never going to be ground shaking but a little more would be nice.
I'd say I could lash a small scoop together in MDF fairly quickly without too much hassle.
I suppose it's more that I'd like to hear what it would be like.
I could make a floor standing scoop enclosure with the driver baffle angled up towards the listener?

Part of the reason a scoop does what it does is because the front of the speaker radiation is merging in phase with the horn radiation, like a tapped horn. Turning the driver away would decrease the effect. I would not recommend it. Also worth mentioning that sims for combined response like that always look weird when I have tried to run them.

If you are feeling brave about the build, I say just go on and do it. It will make sound, and if it is not what you like then make a monitor box and save your money up for a scoop capable driver to reload with. If it sounds awesome and you figure out a good way to make it work for your needs, even better.

Didn't the element5 guys make a rear loaded w bin style monitor cab? What I'm remembering was mounted horizontally on a pole.
Keep pushing on, things are gonna get better.

Here's a pic of the coaxial rearloaded horn that Element 5 did: http://img109.imageshack.us/img109/5719/hypex2.jpg

Maybe ask Ross if he has more info and/or pictures.
