As i'm coming from the electronic music scene i'm rather new to the roots scene. more to say; completely in the blind. Sometimes all the unwritten rules are hard to follow but i admire the drive people have to keep the scene alive and growing.

I am busy building my own rig to spin some soul, funk, early electric things, some jazz and since a few days i also want to put some vinyls from the reggae/roots movement in my collection. but where to start. Since i bought a lot of pop-collections in the 90's i allready have Bob marley in my collection, but are there any classic compilations one must have to have an base to build on?

Soul Jazz records has some nice reggae compilations and the quality of the records is also real good.

edit. Also a lot of the other styles you mentioned in the first post can be found from soul jazz records.

There were some albums released in the late 70's early 80's called The Front Line which have some classics on by IRoy etc which may be worth a look. There was also a collection of classic Trojan singles on a free CD from a short lived mag published in the UK which was called VOX.

Check out any Trojan box set.

A lot of Front Line stuff was recently collected onto I think 3 download albums - some killer reggae from the classic era there.
