so, this is my new project. ludicrously impractical mid horns that are somehow quite practical ;) 12" high efficiency driver on a fook off hexagonal horn, ideally to be used with a  bass cab i've designed but have yet to build so time will tell if that's a workable solution or not.

one thing i found from the gig at the weekend was that the imperials dont like being crossed in the region the horn does, is where the phase shift etc occurs, definitely needed more than half hours setting up prior to the event but thats what you get when you rush something and are using a ultradrive that cuts the sound when you change things :/

the inital prototype of this horn garnered a visit from environmental health despite being in an industrial area, seems to work well with all music, likes metal lots, bangs like a shithouse door with psy/techno, sounds like it was intended to play a 303 :)

some photos and videos of the inital prototype here... http://s300.photobucket.com/albums/nn7/danger_noise/

pictures are of the second prototypes, built very quickly to be ready for the saturday just gone, hence the gak and hardboard nature of the flares, final versions will be much nicer and have phase plug and better throat/driver coupling.

massive thanks to james for lending a hand on saturday and instigating the coaxial horn mountings!

Excellent work Rich, I love your projects and the fact your not afraid to experiment.
No matter what you put into your system if your speakers are shite it'll sound shite! Simple init?

thanks dude:) arguably its looking to the past and seeing what seems sensible rather than experimenting as such, many good ideas get overlooked in time (aetheric universe therory for example;) )  ultimately my goal with this system is to produce the maximum (good quality) sound from the minimum amount of drivers, x-over points and materials... feels a bit like i'm becoming a bit of a hippy in that sense but realistically the world is seven shades of fucked and the last thing it needs is rigs requiring a small power station and several dubious rare earth materials factories in china to make it work. line array this is not.

Agree with you on that! I've been doing the back to basics thing for a few years now and everything seem's so much better, I'm now using a 25 year old mixer, reflex cabs with large CD horns (built in 1988), toroidal amps (34 years old) and just a simple analogue crossover and without all what's become the normal clutter my system sound's lovely.

bass cabs i have designed are same path length as the mid horn, hopefully going to be going analogue with the final system, is quite a night and day difference when compared with digital, also going to be making an mp3 bat from offcuts to smite anyone who dares play trite through it when completed. sadly seems to be an increasing trend :(

had dj slimzee playing through it other weekend with james' phillishaves, at one point thought they were broken but then realized it was just a filthy old dubplate, totally vinyl set of old fucked records that brought so much more joy than a digital set...was alive albeit a bit gash soundwise in the general scheme of things

I took a pair of SL1210's out just before Christmas and couldn't believe the difference, everything sounded so much fuller definitely had more kick yes there was a little rumble from the bass but I had the cabs quite close so to be expected, but it's now spurred me on the looking for 12" record collections LOL
Very happy with my system now but just need to restyle it a little to make the cabs a bit more moveable design's done and will be buying a quantity of birch ply over the next week or two.

Doing the same thing I've restored 2 Crest Century consoles this year a 24 x4 and a 40x8 both for less than $1000 restored People are giving away solid consoles just to go digital I'm using Stipes Cyclops  and building modified MT130 with 2 12" and a 2" for the tops, as we speak. Waiting for warm weather to fire the whole rig 8 Cyclops and 8 tops Amps are all Crown XTI's Not a lot of power but will still do the job for this rig I'll post picks of the tops soon as I'm building them around warm weather days
Love older gear  Still have 2 Crown M600 (they are the size of an air conditioner) waiting for restoration Have restored an A&H GL3 and GL2 and 3 Heathkit AA1600 amplifiers and a DBX 160 (with the meter) compressor. Thinking about going old school and doing the whole rig with Crest power (8001 etc.)I know this stuff weighs a ton but I've never been a briefcase engineer.

Will

In my early years my favorite phrase was "If it's too loud your too old" Now I'm just too old

Doom indeed. I reckon if you're going down this no-compromise route you really should have an acoustic lens on the top though. Is the next stage going to be fibreglass or more wood?

Yes its all about the vinyl. The warmth, the crackle . . . it shows age and use. Love it!

urm, well, of course i fancy some terrahorns who wouldn't, totally unfeasible though. if still about in 6 months and not found them a good home might be interested but still probably unfeasible unless some people want ridiculous mid horns building inthe meantime ;)
