Right, I'm new here, I'm 17 and do a bit of sound engineering at school and local events, about a year ago I started doing Mobile Dj'ing (I know it's the exact opposite of live sound, I just need the money!!). Anyway, I started off small with a pair of peavey 15" tops and then bought some dodgy skytec subs I realised this was a bad idea. Then I saw these come up for sale down the road from me on the bay, so I bought on them. The only thing was that they didn't come with any drivers.....so I was looking for some advice. These are the speakers:
They are 2x15" reflex enclosures. And I was told they came out of an installation near by. What speaker drivers would people suggest? I was advised on a budget to buy Eminence Kappa 15LF And if I had more money to buy some Precision Devices PD156 What I'd like to know it: Are these good options? And money no object, what are the best drivers to put in these? On a side note, any suggestions for mid/top speakers that would go well with these? Thanks, Dave

Hi. Download WinISD Pro http://www.linearteam.dk/default.aspx?pageid=winisdpro Scale the cabinet’s dimension in WinISD Pro. Once you scale the cabinet, explore any 15-inch you desire and, evaluate which driver will offer the flattest response in your cabinets from 100 Hz – downwards. Here are good reading material that will help you along the way. http://www.speakerplans.com/index.php?id=faq1 http://www.speakerplans.com/index.php?id=faq4 Best Regards, Edited by Elliot Thompson - 08 August 2012 at 6:10pm |

Before you possibly waste money on them I suggest you find out the Fb of the box. Looking at the ports they appear to be just the material thickness in length (18mm?).
Unless whoever built them knew exactly what they were doing the tuning frequency could be totally unusable. You can find out the port frequency using the drivers you already have. Tony |

Have you got some sort of LMS? If not, you could end up destroying those 'expensive' drivers you randomly stick in there!

Haha, the drivers are some cheap ones I bought for £40, so it doesn't really matter if they get destroyed

get winisd on the go and learn to use it. find the specs of your drivers t&s values, and input them into the 'own drivers' section. next adjust the box volume so it is the same as yours and adjust the tuning frequency until you get a good looking graph.
work out the surface area of your ports and then select the same size and number of ports in win ISD. If the calulated port length is similar to what you already have then bonus. If not then select a different driver or modify the box accordingly. edit: I think on second thoughts your box will be too small for these drivers. Edited by lgosdset - 09 August 2012 at 12:14am |

Fb is nothing to do with the drivers, its a property of the box (tuning frequency).
The easiest way to get a rough guess is to remove the grilles from the one with the drivers in and do a tone sweep. At the tuning frequency cone movement is at a minimum, once you find this minimum you have a rough idea. |
