Have seen this a lot.
a jbl 4530 (scoop) with some sort of piezo in it. doesn't sound good at all (understatement ), but it's a cheap solution if someone wants to go "fullrange" with one cab and doesn't have the money to do it the correct way.

I have seen JBL bullets in 4530 15" scoops, when used with the extended range K or E 130 driver.
Of course this is a rather specialised driver, with a very light cone, and could be crossed to the bullet at 3khz,but to plonk a piezo in with a standard bass driver is just silly. Edited by jbl_man - 08 August 2012 at 6:55pm |

I would imagine the majority of those who tote around scoops don't know that the design was never aimed to be a bass bin but a full-range cabinet. Best Regards, |

^ this have a look at some of the older jbl stuff. i used to own a couple of ancient ported 15 inch w bins by EV. they had a 1 inch horn and a baby bum tweeter in the front of em, and you would be suprised how good they sounded. that said,i would never build a full range cab in this way. cheers dave Edit: that looks like an old E130ish driver, with its alu dust cap. realy good drivers which in their day were considered more midrange drivers than what current conceptions of a scoop driver would lead to you believe. these drivers are great in foldback. in australia there are a couple of old cabs (the DLP (2x15inch) and SLP (1x15inch, Single Low Profile) foldback wedges, build by Jands i think. these old dinosaurs would realy shock you. I could be wrong, they might be old clair bros cabs, and much more international than i think, but i dont realy know their origin. they were loaded with JBL E drivers. E140s i think. @ Elliot Thompson I'm not an expert on this, but according to jbl the 4530 acts as a direct radiator above 150Hz, which would suggest that you could go high with these cabs, so this could match what you are saying about horns and full range. But they also claim that the highest recommended crossover is 800Hz, even with a E140. So there must be a reason why they claim this? Anyway, as said, have heard several version of these with some sort of piezo or tweeter and they always sounded like rubbish, like there was more missign than present @ Adam I have been using these scoops for many years now, loaded with JBL 2226. + they sound pretty good + you only need one driver to get some serious output + can be used just about anywhere for just about anything - they are very big (and heavy) - they don't go low, unless you stack more of them There are people out there who say that they are even better with a RCF (15lp200ak). But never heard these...
