I'm planning on building a HD15, I'm good with the woodwork, but I don't know with kind of wires I'm going to need. I'm going to run the bin through an active crossover (the kind outside the speaker right?).

A very simple question that.

A piece of 2.5mm2 speaker cable inside the box will do the job fine.
And things like m/top and fullrange cabs under 600w rms 1.5mm2 does the job fine.
Only really high power drivers of 1200w rms or more need 4mm2 in the cab, imo.

TBH no driver needs more than 4mm2 in the cab, ever!

the new nerdy-max-SB2700 2700W 8r 18" will sound no different with 400mmof 2.5 than it does with 400mm of 4mm.

Wire cabs up with 2.5mm to each driver, use either NL4 or NL8, always solder your speakons, Faston are 3rd world...
