Hey Dub, I just brought a pair of brand new fane sov pro 15lf's loaded them in this box:

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc260/anthony_wilkes/Sov15-600.jpg

Had them doing kick bass/low mid 70Hz to 220Hz 24dB active crossover, running 4ohm from one channel of my matrix 7k (not full blast obvs). This was above one 18xb loaded g-sub. The drivers seemed to be a good match for the cabinet and yet only lasted for one loud house party and half way through one gig when someone reported the drivers were smoking!! The voice coils had just completely disintegrated you can hear it all rattling around in there now. The annoying thing is I don't think we really thrashed them and they were sounding really good right up to self destruction, ie no sound of being pushed to hard/distorting etc. I didn't think 70-220 would be straining a 15" bass driver..

So just a word of warning really....

Also if anyone can point out what i did wrong here?..  or maybe i got unlucky, when they arrived the boxes had signs that the drivers had been bashed about quite hard.. could the magnets have shifted slightly? Happy to dissect the drivers if anyone wants to see the burnt voice coils if it helps work out what caused it..

Not to say the pro LF's are rubbish drivers, but have a listen to the pro 15-600. Whole different box of frogs. Been amazed how controlled and deep they've gone. I really didn't want to sell but got offered BMS 15s330's at an amazing rate and they've replaced the fane's.

@ dub specialists i'll try get some tomorrow for you!

@dj jammin, not sure that box was designed for THOSE drivers!... maybe a spike in kick burnt them out.
If it sounds like a gorilla is trying to escape, turn it down.

Have some 600 pro LF in small reflex boxes that I use for low mid and they sound good from about 50-120ish but after that they peak the amp like hell!

Not good for upper bass at all.

The 15-500 I have do a lot better.

These drivers are not marketed as being a dedicated bass driver:
'The Sovereign Pro 15-600LF is intended for use in two-way ported enclosures, such as the classic bass driver plus horn tweeter or compression driver format'

. So surely should be capable of doing 70-220? That should be right in their comfort zone no?

I'm a bit fed up with Fane to be honest, yeah their stuff is fairly cheap but these drivers cost me approx £120 each and now they a just trash. Apparently not economically viable to have them reconed..

Also is there any way of telling why they failed so quick??

The problem with it could have been that at 70-220 there will be relatively little excursion of the driver, and a lot of bass drivers sometimes rely on that to help cool the voice coil with air movement. So you could have cooked them that way unfortunately. The smoke suggests that is what happened.

If you were using them true 2-way they would have had a lot more excursion especially around 40-60hz which may have helped cool the voice coil. But at 3 way you don't get that so you think it is ok to put more power into them because they aren't anywhere near xmax right? But actually you are killing them because the voice coil is getting even hotter with now ay of cooling down. Every driver is a bit different in this respect I guess, some may sink heat better into the basket and dissipate it that way, relying less on convection. Not enough experience in the area to confidently say

Sorry for the thread highjack Dub.
