I'm the lucky owner of 4 Community's SLS920 and using them in passive mode.
When I drive the cabs to their limits, sometimes the VHF100 doesn't survive the end of the evening unfortunately. Probably it's also related to the age of the diafragma. As it's pretty difficult to get a recone at a realistic price in Western Europe, I was wondering if someone as ever tried to find an alternative for the VHF100 without changing to much to the standard SLS920 setup? Many thanks for your help! Gideon |

Try the Beyma CP380M.
It doesn't sound as nice, but it handles more power, and is affordable. |

Looking at the specs there is quite big a difference in sensivity, did you also notice did in practice? Crossover in sls920 limits the high frequency pretty fast, how did you manage to get the same output?
Eminence and B&C has some driver in their portfolio with a high sensivity |

If you look at the graphs rather than the headline spec you'll see that 111dB is quite optimistic.
I'd also consider trying something like the B&C DE250 or CP385Nd

http://www.communitypro.com/sites/default/files/VHF100.pdf The PC-694 horn has a Di of about 13 above 4Khz, and is about 105dB/2.83V with the VHF100. The complete driver is about $300, the diaphragm is about half that (USA prices). The VHF100 driver has a lower compression ratio than most (that's one reason it sounds better than most). A Beyma or B&C shouldn't have too much of a problem keeping up. Before CLS developed the VHF100 they used either the JBL 2426 or the Eminence 1". At a distance of more than about 30' the lack of VHF above 10khz or so was not noticeable (Eminence), but the air overload in the high compression phase plugs was ('quacking' sounds at high levels). I only noticed the 'quacking' sound on live vocals, and with a stupid large amp (3KW/4Ω), the Eminence sounded fine on recorded music, even outside at a large distance. All the Faital are good.
The 108 (newer, neo, and less expensive). |

Hi,
Sorry to bring this up again. Did you try the HF10AK in the end? If so how was it? I have got some sls920's with blown VHF100's and also want an alternative. Do you think it will make any difference to the 8" having a different shape driver mounted on the back of the HF horn... It seems to be acting as a phase plug. Any other suggested alternatives to the vhf100/faital driver? Apparently the HF10ak is only made to order now, not produced in bulk. |
