Single 15" woofer plus 2" throat (3"Voice coil) compression driver probably is the best bet for your budget. Use either the X15 plan on this site: http://www.speakerplans.com/index.php?id=x15, 18Sound plans http://www.eighteensound.com/staticContent/applications/kits/18Sound_kit15.pdf, B&C plans http://www.bcspeakers.com/suggested.php?id=0000000005, Beyma plans http://www.speakerstore.nl/constructions/77 but change the components to the following. In Australia can be difficult to source good quality for decent price. Below is my suggestion 2" compression driver Celestion CD2-3065 ($500 pair) The celestions are rebadged B&C DE85 Woofer 15CL76 B&C http://www.bcspeakers.com/PDF/PRD/15CL76.pdf is probably around $300ea Though I only have last years price list and the above is a 2010 model. This is from Acoustic technologies in Brisbane Contact Ron Delbridge 07 3376-4122 Alternatively Woofer P.Audio c15-600el $299ea http://www.cannonsound.com.au/p/577286/paudio-c15-600el-600-watt-15-inch-low-frequency.html If you can only afford a 1" horn driver, there is the Celestion CDX1-1745 (1746,1730 or 1731). OR B&C DE250 $250ea from acoustic technologies

The XTI6000 is slightly overkill for this job and you could probably save some money by looking at a QSC PLX1804 and put the left over money into the speakers or add subs.
PLX1804 $1299 Alternatively look into a smaller crown or the new EV amplifiers

hey glen you seem to be a super whiz on everything and i realise i was being totally unrealistic trying to build a 1200w speaker for 600 dollars. so i was thinking i would stop being such a tight arse and build some mt122 with the p audio sn 12b neo and p audio sd 750n neo comp driver and p audio ph 2723 horn (total 700w). would i be able to build that so they are 4ohm and use the crown xti 2000 amp on 4ohm which will give me 800w. or would i have to just get a different amp not on the xti range?
and then i realised that if i want to build them the volume will totally drop off at at about 120-100 hz which is perfect for an x1 sub. which driver/amp would you recommend to run with this system. i recognise this system will be quite top end heavy but i think that will be alright for my use. thanks heaps glenn, your definitely a huge huge help :)

Hi Raffe, welcome to speakerplans! Glenn's given you some good advice there.
There are a couple of problems with your X1 + MT122 idea: - The X1 works best as part of a four way set up, with an upper bass cab above it (e.g. HD15, USB), then MT122 above. - Two MT122 to one X1 will make for a very unbalanced system. Two MT122's would be more than enough top for four, six or possibly even eight subs. Have a look at this system. - The MT122 has a reputation for being one of, if not the most, difficult plans on this site to build If you'd like to build a sub plus a mid top cabinet system, I'd suggest going for a simpler reflex system, especially if its your first build. Think along the lines of X12 + G Sub (there are lots of possible variations though). Here's an example of this kind of system Another (even better?) option would be to stick with your first idea of building a full range speaker. You can always add subs later. The plans Glenn suggested are good ones. Edited by colinmono - 25 June 2010 at 7:34am |

hey thanks so much for the advise, im sure ill be fine with the woodwork component as iv done rather alot in the past and also im looking at making the mt122's as the start for a larger system, im just not able to afford it yet haha :). however i reviewed the curves of both the mt 122 and the x1 and have decided to replace that x1 with a g-sub and hopefully get some big sub-bass subs in there too :) once again thanks very much for all of your advise :)

Passive or active?
Surely active, so two amps?
Passive 1200w crossovers could be a litlle difficult

It just is.
