While many do it, it is far from optimum solution. You can get quite nice 2" horns that aren't overly large, while they still load down to 800hz or so.

Most 15" drivers will make quite nasty breakup peaks between 1-2khz that require some serious attention. Combine that to the way that 350mm radiating surface that really starts to control the dispersion around those frequencies.

Having said that, Fane Sov Pro 15-600N is quite nicely damped and controls the breakup rather well, so half of the problem is solved there. Also efficiency = 4,3% Mms = 82g. One of the few proper MID band 15" drivers on the market I think.

I'd combine that with something like 18Sound XR2064 with nice modern 2" driver, or second hand JBL 2" crossed over around 800-1000hz. Other option would be 18Sound XT1086 or Faital LTH102 with BMS 4550 or something similar that could be crossed around 1-1,2khz.

Probably the best sounding PA box I've ever heard is the Meyer CQ-1. Traditional american box with 15" and 2" drivers with quite traditional looking horn and quite interesting, well developed cone. Crossed over around 700hz it is something I'd probably use happily in my front room.

How about Kappa Pro-15A? Would be quite close to your price range and looks to be somewhat smooth and efficient?

When googling all info I seem to find refers to them being 102db.

The Fane Studio Series were developed in the '80s before the takeover by Wharfedale.

Probably one of the most advanced series of drivers in these days. Used by well known manufacturers both in PA (Turbosound, Funktion One) and domestic High End (Audio Voice Acoustics).

The Studio 8 (BS, M) has been a populair mid/bass driver for many years. Fane has even relaunched the Studio 12 some time ago as part of their guitar/instrument speaker catalog. As you can tell from the technical specs and the pictures the current Souvereign as well as the Collossus line-up are derived from the Studio Series.

In my personal view Fane is one of the few (big) manufacturers that still offers (cone) drivers with exeptional performance.

If you're living in  the UK, a pair of Studio 15B's should not be very hard to find.

I uploaded a scanned image of the old catalog with specs of both the Studio 15B and Studio 15L. Of the latter I own a pair.

Last night tried FANE Sovereign Pro 15-500 in yet another cab, and results were incredible.

Needless to say, cabs no longer for sale, no longer searching for drivers, and Fane drivers staying put.

LOL

Other 15" drivers with extremely light membranes are RCF MB15N351 (mms 80 gramms) and Beyma 15MI100 (mms 72 gramms).

With 6% efficiency I think the Beyma is the most efficient 15" mid driver in current production. Can't cross it any lower than ~100Hz though, because of Xmax. Voice coil height = gap depth in such highly efficient drivers.
