for the amount you are willin to spend, i would sugjest JBL C508GTI or C608GTI. both of these have AMAZING sound and are very well built. they will want between 125-200watt of supplied power per two-way set *woofer driver and tweeter equaling one set*.

if you've got a reasonable amount of cash to spend I'd check out the dynaudio range. VERY VERY VERY good speakers although not always to everyones tastes.

Hi,
Don’t want to start an argument or anything but from the searches I've done on those model numbers I've not seen that much to impress me. The GTI sub range is meant to be very good but the comps certainly haven't been talked about in high regard. The dynaudio comps are always highly regarded and have won many awards, they're based around their hi-fi / studio range of drivers which are again multi award winning, they certainly shouldn't be discounted until you've heard some properly setup. Have you heard the dynaudio comps before? I don't think they're that easy to get over in the Just intrigued really why you'd totally disregard the dynaudio's in favour of speakers that I can't seem to find any really positive comments about, just because they've got the fabled JBL name doesn't necessarily make them best. |

@ Jay Lawless... Out of curiosity, are you then basing your opinions on the JBL speakers as a result of reading some document, rather than actually hearing them?
Personally I love the sound of Dynaudio, though I've only had experience actually listening to their hi-fi and studio speakers, but if they are anything like the car audio range as ad-d suggests then they are excellent. |

the GTi comps are not lacking in mids what so ever, my guess is those who are judging them are partly deaf. i've heard the GTi's before and they sound remarkable. there is a RTA graph around somewhere showing what they are capable of playing and shows pretty flat. the only reason why they are not mentioned much is because of thier mounting depth. because of the DDD designed motor, they have deeper needed mounting depths then most drivers out there. all in all though, the resulting sound from them is amazing. the tweeter drivers are especialy nice, no harsh highs or spiking points, just a nice warm high sound. i've heard from others that these comps even sound better without having a highpass on the woofers, but i would sugjest lowest highpass at 60hz and highest at 80hz...

Personally I prefer Morel over Dynaudio drivers.
Morel make sweet sweet sounding mids and highs as my m8s dad has some funny huge teak covered pyramid shaped hifi speakers with about 3 Morel dome tweeters and soft dome mids in it.
Not sure what bass drivers are in them, maybe Morel as well. Will have to ask my m8s dad.
They sound as accurate as top end studio speakers and you can even feel the bass at low-ish volumes.
Gonna get a pic of them next time I'm round my m8s house.
That must be the most powerfull 4 inch bass driver I ever come across. 150w rms with 2 + 1/8 inch voice coil is bloody amazing for a 4 inch driver.

Morel are nice, but don't think they make in car products.
If we're going for who makes the ultimate drivers full stop, then my vote goes to ATC. If you wanna check out what an over built hi-fi driver looks like type ATC SCM20sl into google, click on the top link, et voila... Check out the bass/mid driver. Morel... Paaah! They also do a mid driver, which the driver pictured on the link above is based on, and has the same magnet assembley, 3" VC and doped material dome. In my experience that particular driver is the best mid driver on the face of the planet. I was lucky enough to own a pair of Proacs for some years (until I moved into a place which was far to small for them..) which had the afore mentioned mid driver, 10" ATC bass driver and Scanspeak tweeter. Hi-fi heaven! |
