I think a sine wave of high enough SPL becomes more saw-tooth shaped over distance. This is because sound travels faster in higher pressure air so the high pressure parts of the wave end up skewing in the direction of the wave. Apparently this is noticeable in situations with loud SPL being heard from a distance such as rockets taking off and thunder.

Yes of course. Nowadays we have constant, whether it be a motorway like the m25 in the distance or a waterfall in a jungle. It's there and there is no getting away from it.
