I will be posting to this topic to show the development of Baby Sham Soundsystem. (The name will become clear with later posts.
I thought it was about time that I got into portable 12v stuff. It needed to be transportable but not necessarily picked up and carried. I had a pair of old Celestion KR2 speakers that I could use although the driver was shot in one of them. I bought a Celestion TF0818 pa driver to replace the knackered one as it has superb efficiency for an 8 inch at 96db/1w/m efficiency being key to portable stuff. I hooked out an old car booster and had a play around. It worked well but I have ordered a T series amp for a bit more efficiency. I also hooked out a fairly low power modified sine wave inverter. This will be used to power the laptop which will be used to mix music using a cheap but small DJ2Go mixer attached to the PC. I will continue to update this thread as I go on but its a start. I do have some ideas that will work fairly well but I need to knock them up before I can show them here. To be updated.............. |

Ok, my TA2024 amp (Muse) turned up so it was time to progress my little project.
Firstly, I will explain why it is called Baby Sham. 'A picture can say a 1000 words': Also, I was inspired by the wheely bin sound system I saw at Shambalah festival last year and my friends baby buggy seemed to be good in the rough stuff so an idea was formed...... Excuse the slight untidiness I just wanted to see how loud the amp was on the speakers and play some tunes in the garden from mains (well kind of mains from my shed solar powered supply). It was plenty loud enough for what I need, the efficient PA style celestions help there: enough for a few people to party around. My next stage is getting a SLA to power it. I was thinking of a 35AH as although the amp drains sod all I would like the option of running some low powered LED lights from it at night. The controls (long view) and close up (DJ 2 go and a cheap latop for the music): |

Thanks Shortrope.
I reckon with a blanket on top we should be able to get this in places that other mobile soundsystems would not be able to get😀 The buggy is also suprisingly good through a bit of mud too! |

The amp will run for days on 35ah, but LED light strip can draw a fair bit if on constant... bigger battery is probably worthwhile just for that
Have you worked out how much the inverter is pulling? also, wicked rig - love the resourcefulness Edited by bitSmasher - 15 February 2015 at 9:19pm |

Bitsmasher: i do not know how much the inverter is pulling. I need to do some measurements. It is well worth using a modified sine wave inverter if the mains kit you are using will cope with it. Pure sine wave inverters make the sine wave by chopping bits off so you lose efficiency. My shed/workshop has a big pure sine wave inverter but it can handle it as i have some big batteries and panels to charge them. I am not sure how much weight i want to be carting about so more experiments to follow: i may just use some battery powered lights only if i have a problem.
Thanks for the compliment, you are one of many on here that i have taken inspiration from. |

I have finally got together the last components of my little project.
Firstly I have boxed up the voltage display into a waterproof Tupperware box: Secondly I have all power running from a Sterling 35ah SLA battery onto which I have fitted a 20A MCB circuit breaker complete with reset button for safety and to enable me to turn it all on/off: Now I just need a bit of time at a weekend then I will take it for its first public outing, maybe a picnic with some mates. I am confident that I should get a good run time from it from experiments in the garden but usage in anger always helps iron out problems. I will post photos of the event in due course.............. |

Got the Baby Sham out at the weekend. Weekend Camping/BBQ/Music: I took the main rig and my Baby Sham. Quite pleased with it, I ran it for about 8 hours friday night, it still had quite a lot of power but I charged the battery on solar power as it was available then ran it after we had turned off the main rig on saturday night. A bit short on photos as my camera battery died but I got a couple of it running on friday.
There is a 5w LED moonflower on one side which I have on whilst my PC batteries are charging. The spinning light sticks run off their own batteries so I can cycle the power to my mini inverter meaning that it will run for enough to run all night and more. |

A bit late posting this but some photos from Baby Sham Pram Sound-system at Shambala festival.
Freaky Baby Sham mascot. The amount of people who initially thought it was a real baby was unreal! The Sham with the kt on-board. A crowd in front of Baby Sham. A bit of drum and bass around a fire...... We had 4 bongo players and 1 black and white mime artist in front of us at one point! The highlight of my festival. I will be upgrading to a bassface amplifier over the winter. |
