What About Nexo. Whereto they sit?, I hear there STM system is impressive.

Nexo were very popular in the past, Alpha was one of the biggest point sources boxes back in the day and, though t's a bit big and bulky compared to some systems now, still holds up even today. And PS15's were a huge seller, pretty much the standard for a 15" box on a stick for hire companies.

However their Geo line arrays of a few years ago didn't really set the world on fire and they dropped down a few places in recognition.

STM from what I hear is very impressive, and seems a clever system. But I don't know how many big companies have bought into it. While I understand the different modules make you able to put it together in different configurations and sizes which is a plus for a rental company, it seems like to get the equivalent system to a normal array of K1 or J or whatever it's a lot of weight to hang, so lots of smaller venues (and hence smaller companies) wont be able to take it and it'll only really be for the big boys. However I may well be wrong it's not something I've massively looked into.

Thanks Kevin for the reply.

I agree with you about the weight. It's huge deterrent. But everything else about it is very clever and technologically advanced. I hope I get to listen to a STM system soon.

It should be Rider, but it's a list of requirements the performer and production has to put on a show. So the question can be translated into "what are the most requested speakers by bigger bands".

A ryder is a condition placed upon the venue by the artists (or management of said artists) for their performing. It could include everything from backstage provisions (food, drink, {girls?}) to more commonly the soundsystem and desk out front.

hey

yeah the Rider is the common term for the document an artist would send a venue detailing all their requirements for a show.

It would have sections on what the artist requires in their dressing room, how many crew are travelling and what's expected for meals, and it may have sections for hotel and travel arrangements etc if the promoteris sorting that and not a tour manager (if it's a one off show rather than a large tour) etc etc.

Crucially for this discussion though it'll also have a section with all the technical specifications for the show. If its a huge UK tour that is bring the full PA, lights, video and staging themselves then it might not be much more complicated than how many lifting points they need in the roof and how many local crew they expect to be there to help unload and set everything up.

But if they're not touring with their own PA, it'll have all the requirements for what they expect to be provided by local PA companies at each venue:  Brands of speakers and mixing desks, channel lists and stage plots, etc etc.

Most engineers will aim for consistency across a tour to make sure they get a good show at every venue. While there could be some local PA company that builds excellent home brew boxes that sound amazing, they can't rely on this because equally the home brew PA could sound like a bag of nails. So they'll insist that the PA is one of a very small number of brands they've used before and are happy to work with, so they know they have a minimum level of quality and that they show will sound good.

These would be the Rider-Friendly brands that the OP started the thread about.

Yeah the two most famous ones were the Van Halen Brown m&ms (They asked for a bowl of M&Ms with all the brown ones removed. While everyone assumes this was them being full of themselves, it was actually a test. They had a lot of the very early synths and delicate equipment, and wanted to see how much attention was paid to their requirements. If they didn't remove the brown ones, there's a good chance they hadn't stuck to other more crucial technical details either and everything should be checked more thoroughly), and Iggy Pop's hillarious one that was written stream of concious by a roadie (the old version was best, though the newer one is still a good laugh).

There's a website called smoking gun that has a section dedicated to these, has those two plus a huge pile of others from artists both old and new.

edit:  Unfortunately now that I look at this website, it seems to have changed a lot these days, and looks to be much more about the TMZ style silly news stories now a days. However here's the original Iggy one that started it all off......

and all the rest are available in the "backstage" section.
