Just got a cheapo Soundlab G097A which is basically as cheap as they come but inside it has 12 yes 12 NPN PNP devices (2SA940 and 2SC2073) paired up. With a spec output of just 1.5 amps each, why on earth wouldn't you just use say 1 complementary pair per channel - at a higher rating, given how cheap they are to buy ?

spreads the heat over more transistors instead of a few highly rated ones? Just a uneducated guess anyway.

They got a deal on the smaller devices? For example, they use them as drivers on the bigger amps, so have plenty to spare. Decisions like that are always down to economics.

Given how crappily cheap it is I suspect Earplugs hit it. The 2 PSU caps are 35V 3300 feeding the whole lot. When I switched it on first time one went phiz and filled the room with white smoke. Even got a pic which i'll post when i know how. Anyway, I bought it for the case as a project but before I gut it I will hook it up (change the caps first!) and listen.
