i have an 18 sound nd9300 here. the glue holding the spider to the chassis seems to have failed. i glued it back with some 2 part glue (can't find it right now so not sure what it was), and it seemed to take, and worked well for some workshop testing.

but then after 1 or 2 nights out, it's come unstuck again.

generally does re-gluing an arc of surround work or would i need to separate the whole thing and clean off the old glue and redo it? it seems like the coil has room in the gap, it's pretty tolerant of me pushing it around as i work on it. i bought them as reconed, and the cones always looked slightly off center but they've worked well for years and years till now.

seems unnecessary to get a whole recone kit just for this.

To get good adhesion you'll need to clean both surfaces but especially the metal.  I'd question whether or not you're going to get the voicecoil correctly centred by gluing the spider back in place like this (no shims in the voicecoil gap etc.) but you've nothing to lose at this point.

As above clean both surfaces, do not use a two part adhesive, a contact adhesive is better for this at this point, put on both surfaces and keep them apart until ready to make the joint, if you have a third of the spider still bonded then it should stay fairly central, I've done this a few times when needed and it will be ok, good luck.

cheers for the replies, and cheers for the pm concept-10.

it's about half of it is loose, so it's half still attached. i'll have a go with some acetone and see if i can clean it up a bit.

Good plan, try and dissolve the adhesive rather than chip it and bits to in the gap 😀

this poor driver. i cleaned it up as best i could, and redid it with some of the blue aran black glue. the glue was a few years old though.. 2014 was the date stamp on it. it felt a bit too thick, but i had a go at it anyway. and it seemed to work. left it to dry for a bit. set the driver up in the workshop playing some music, just freestanding. got the excursion pretty high and left it at that for a while. it seemed good. so boxed it, took it to a party. set it up, all was well. i was pretty happy with that. i had to go somewhere else for a few hours though.. and when i came back, not a sound out of it.

so today is equipment autopsy day after the weekend there. so the whole spider has now separated from the chassis, except about 1 cm of it. which is held on by the blue aran glue.

it seems the tinsel leads have separated somewhere.. multimeter further in towards the coil shows expected resistance.

so eh.. i still have nothing to lose so i'll see if i can sort of completely decone it, clean up the chassis properly, and i may as well have a go at reconing it.. again.

good times.

cheers for all the tips.

I had one go like that - spider to chassis. I reasoned that as the spider was already saturated with another adhesive it probably wanted something different from what you'd ordinarily use for a recone. I attempted it with west system epoxy which has held up for 10 years or so on a long throw driver regularly taken to xmax.
As I was using a hard adhesive I only applied it to the chassis to avoid making any parts of the spider non flexible.

I may have just got lucky. Hope it works out for you - as you say, little to loose at this point!
