If you're trying to reduce comb filtering, your probably want to reduce the distance between the acoustic centres of the drivers. Yes, have decided against a spacer between the two drivers. Remember when modelling port lengths that if the port uses the cabinet wall as one of it's boundaries, the length the driver sees may be slightly greater than the 'A' distance shown on the Fane plan.
Good to know, saw that mentioned in another thread and that's certainly the case here. What's the preferred way to compensate for this? Also, this plan has a 1" overhang on the front (you can see it in the side view) so, is it common practice to account for additional depth added to the port created for example by adding an 13mm thick front panel with baffle & port cutout for a more finished look?

This is the sort of layout I would probably gravitate towards, in part because the port lends structural rigidity without extra bracing and it's a simple build. Seems fairly 'optimal' to me. For modelling the port, there are more scientific methods that would take into account the port termination (whether it's graduated to minimise chuffing or improve impedance matching with the air). I would be far more finger in the air. When modelling I'd add a centimetre or two here or there depending on how long the port is and how many cabinet walls it's up against. Then build slightly longer than necessary and tune later by cutting it shorter. I'm far from an expert though.

No disagreement there.
Any of you guys have tips for how to secure the shelf port enough for accurate testing of the driver/cab and then removal and trim if needed? Is it as simple as only screw and no glue? Thanks again for all the input here thus far, much appreciated. |
