Hello everybody, just joined the site from the North East of England :)
After a bit of advice. I'm wanting to build a smallish sound system. Its been something I've wanted to do for years. I've built a few car audio systems from scratch and have been around the party scene for years. The main reason that's give me the recent urge is I've just acquired a 6k diesel genset for work thats now mounted in the back of my van. I'm not sure what the constant draw maximum is but it runs all sorts of power tools and work lights all day long and its a big old beast. Its got 110 and 240 on it I dont want anything too big or over the top, just a quality portable rig that will fit in the van so if the opportunity arises we can have our own party at places. Now would I be better off just buying some actives etc seen as I'm pretty new to all of this? The idea of building my own seems so much more rewarding. Whats cost like building your own vs buying? So is my idea ludacris or am I barking up a wooden tree here? I play mostly techno, but more progressive techno, tech house. I would like a bit of bass so possibly 18's or one? Pair of 12's/10s and some decent 1" tweeters? With some quality crossovers etc. Nice tight boxes. Second hand amps. Bobs your uncle? Possibly only 2000w rms? Let me know what your are thinking. Cheers. B.e.n.z.o |

6kW genset? you should be able to have a fair system on that. if you read the thread about running on a generator you should be able to find the capacity at which you can run safely.
i would prob say a pair of 15 bass cabs and 12+1 tops and then get another set of the 15s to add to the bass as you wont be running real deep deep bass so some boxes to play from 45-150ish to really kick for that pounding techno sound! |

I've had a look about cant seem to find the thread on generators? Its a 330 amp diesel welder and 6000watts of power as well.
The stuff I listen to is quite bassy. Usually around 128 bpm. A lot slower than your usual techno. Progressive techno/tech-house etc. I'm pretty sure 15's as you say would be more than suffice. Just I was advised towards 18's for proper bass. Im assuming 15's would be way more portable. Would be good to be able to play a multitude of genres, house, psy, deep dub etc. Cheers. |

Its probably cheaper to buy rather than build but you can end end up with a far superior quality and something you'll be much happier with if you build your own. And you don't need to spend everything all at once, just get components week by week as you go.
I often run my system off a 6kva generator - 2 x184 subs and 2 xMT102's probably just over 2kw. Unfortunately mine is a cheap petrol so while its got plenty of power, its not very clean. Can definitely hear the difference between running on mains. But with a diesel like you have i think you could run more than you could fit in your van...

184s, ive hear quite a few times now, are REALLY good for techno!
4x those and a pair of tops should get you a great bassy sound that pounds really well. |

OM F'ng G Check my threads, a welder set is great for 2 9" grinders, but PA wise, look at an iPod dock!

Is there any need for such an attitude? I was only after a bit of friendly advice I know its not the best power source, but its what I've got available. If it will run 1000w of lights and 4000w of grinders all day long why wouldnt it run a 1k or 2k system at a push. Its a half tonne industrial genset, not a pissy little diesel welder from JTF. I'm not after a huge rig, just enough to satisfy 50 people aurally. So no way is this achievable? Finally can some one please link me up to this illusive generator thread? I've searched for it a few times now to no avail haha Thanks! |

If you're only going to be running a small system I can't see how you you're going to have an issue providing the Voltage regulation on the genny is reasonable. Usual advice applies to put a constant load of say 1-2 kW on it such as some lighting to reduce the influence of the dynamic music signals.
System wise the simple or boring option is some single 15 or 18in reflex subs and 12 or 15in plus HF tops. Easy to find or build and will work with pretty much any music style. Plenty of half decent second hand amps about now everyone has replaced with modern compact lightweights. |
