Hello

I'm looking to hire some stacks of speaker cabs from the early 1970's.  Circa 1970/71 Isle of Wight festival style would be just perfect.  Stage monitors from the same period would also be very handy.

They don't need to work or contain drivers, just look the part.  Does anyone have a quantity of these or know anyone who collects them?

Thanks

Ian

Isle of Wight would probably be WEM systems, very hard to find these days.

Early seventies would normally be classic JBL (4560 & horns/lenses) or early Martin (115/215Mk1, 2x12/3x12 angle box mids, Vitavox or JBL horns). Or maybe a pile of the original Mk1 EV Eliminators or something similar.

Mid to late seventies would be Martin 115/215Mk1 or 215Mk2 with Philshave mids and JBL or Martin horns,  or the Stephen Court / Europa version of classic JBL with added  1x12 wooden horn mids.

Ace Vintage Systems in Warwick have a vintage Martin rig, but I don't know if they have the early bass bins. 215Mk3 would be 1980's, not 1970's.

Wedges might be Court (with pepperpot horns) or Martin (with rectangular horns) or, more likely, hire companies' own designs which could be all sorts.

This all assumes a University or City Hall size gig or an outdoor show, rather than a pub or small club.

John (Robbo) on here may have some better ideas.

Hi Confused

They might do the trick.  How many stack do you have and where are you based?

Cheers

Thanks, Madboffin

According to original photos the festival we are trying to get a close likeness to used a combination WEM style column and next generation 'pile of boxes' stacks.

Great info.

Cheers

Contact JBL man on here as he has loads of retro seventies cabinets that would probably be exactly what you are looking for but it will be more Martin Audio/ASS/JBL style rather than the older WEM style cabinets.

You will be very lucky to find any of the old WEM 4x12 PA cabinets nowadays---You still get the odd pair crop up on Ebay but never in larger quantities.

About two years ago we cleared one of our massive storage barns and would you believe, I threw away an original pair of WEM Festival stacks---the cabinets were in virtually mint condition considering their age but all of the drivers had been removed over the years but I should imagine that they would have been ideal for you as it seems like you need something for a film or retro photo shoot.

Thanks, Robbo

You probably won't remember, but I bought a pair of CODA Audio R35s from you a few years back and came up with Boris/ Carl from Joe Average.

Cheers

CH Vintage Audio have this stuff for hire.

I have never used them but according to their web site they have a very large collection of 60s & 70s vintage gear (including WEM, Martin Audio, HH, Vox etc. all for hire.

Just had a look at their website and it is absolutely brilliant---never even knew that they existed and only just up the road from me.
The Festival Stacks that I threw away were ex Emerson Lake and Palmer and they have been seen in films from long ago--I wish I had kept them now as they would have sounded brilliant with modern day drivers inside.

Hi Ian by the way---nice to see you are still going---Do you still see Boris as I still remember his amazing personality--Cheers--John.

The YouTube video from this guy is amazing - brings back loads of memories from the seventies. The EMS VCS3 shown in his lockup should be in a safe nowadays - the originals are worth an absolute fortune.
For sidefills, can we have two enormous things of a type that might be venerated as Gods by the inhabitants of Easter Island, capable of reaching volumes that would make Beelzebub soil his pants.

Hi Robbo

I'm doing more stage management and film production now, but still keep my hand in on PA.  Boris still lives near me, but I don't think he has his system any more.

Cheers
