Hi guys, took apart my court mid top monsters and noticed the 12" mids are old jbl k120 drivers, I had a quick search on google and they are guitar speakers?! I Want to replace them as they are looking tired. Are people interested in these drivers if I was to sell the old ones to make way for crisp new ones? And anyone had experience with these drivers before and maybe have some advice on the best new driver I could use? All help appreciated =)

How on earth can a JBL K120 "look tired"
They are some of the sweetest sounding drivers ever to be used on midrange----yes, true that they were designed as a guitar speaker but they really are one of the best drivers that you will hear in a horn loaded mid cabinet. |

If the dome is smashed, replace it. A 2202 dome will also work, and is less likely to get smashed. Edited by _djk_ - 06 March 2012 at 1:38pm |

Haahaa John, yes i was thinking the same....maybe a photo of the "tired" driver would help?
Court fitted the E120 (essentially the same driver, but with a larger heavier ferrite magnet) on the later cabs, and then the 2202,which is the dedicated 12" mid driver. The court cabs you have there must be quite old? late 70's? By the way,if you were thinking of selling the k120's,before you ask,the price is entirely dependent on the condition. |

I never knew they were so good! They look really old, think ill be keeping them then =p two of them have a slight rub when the cone is moved, how would I go about fixing that? It doesn't seem to affect the sound too much =s .I bought the cabs of a guy who's been doing sound for a long time so I imagine they are pretty old as he'd been using them for 15 years or so at least.

You fix it by getting them reconed, the genuine kit is expensive, around £130 each + labour.

Just had a quick search on google the k120 recone has a silver dome but mine have normal black ones? Could they have been reconed before? I know you said about court using the e120 on later cabs but the magnet definitely say k120 =s

Will need to see a photo, but im guessing yours have been reconed with a cheap aftermarket kit, hence the black dome.
The genuine one has a alluminium dome. |

Ian, so as to clarify, we know the K120 was the original 12 with the Alnico magnet and the E120 came with a Ferrite one. Although the voice coils remained 4", do you know whether the E120 kit would fit a K120?
