Sometimes I see people saying that a certain frequency needs to be reduced for a cab (+q etc), even though the cab is crossed over way lower than that frequency. I presume this is some sort of overlap due to slope? Is this correct?

Least I do it as routine procedure with iir filters, suppressing out of band resonances. Also may affect phase response depending filter modeling inside the LMS unit.....

I suppose you mean something like using 180Hz notch filter on sub channel with crossover points somewhere 25 and 98 Hz?

At least nearest full octave above/below xo freq. may well benefit of notch or two.
