Hello everyone :)

I've just happily bought a pair of Martins RS802. The model is quite rare and there's not much info about it on the net apart from it's short data sheet. The boxes are in poor condition but the drivers seem to be original (ATC/Martin M1231 + JBL 1" CD with 1987 date on them). Horn flares & crossover network appears to be ok. Perhaps there's someone who have experience with this model? - I would greatly appreciate ANY opinion about their performance + info about original drivers.

Second part of the set (I'm still considering buying it) are DIY made Celestion W-Bins loaded with ATC PA100-375/Martins L1540. The drivers are unfortunately blown. Again: if anyone has experience with either the bins or the drivers, I'd be very thankful for input in this thread.

Some questions:
Is this set able to play a full range spectrum? - The W-Bins are known for their kick but how about low end?
Are the L1540 similar to contemporary 15" woofers? - I mean if there's a chance to get them reconed?
The RS802's came with wooden horn flare extenders - what are the for?
And finally: Is this set worth of restoration? - I've never heard the RS series and just wondering if they aren't too old / unsuccessful prototypes to expect some good results out of them ;)

Thanks in advance for any info :)

Photos to be attached soon.

I am curious as to how much you paid, and any chance of a picy?

That's exactly what I've got, thanks anyway George.
I paid 100pounds for the pair in "untested" condition.

I'm guessing the right hand side of this.

Yes, that's correct. With the only difference is that the 802 has no gap between the Mid and Hi flares.

Photos will be taken and uploaded tomorrow. The detachable extenders are rather DIY but very well built. They are something like the extenders F1 uses for their InfaBass devices. I have really no idea what could be the purpose of using such extender on mid-hi pack Confused

RS 802 cabinets are superb little boxes with very high detailed output for their size---It is basically the mid/hi section of a VRS800 cabinet but housed in a trap box---Throw the horn extenders away as these are an afterthought and were probably used in an old theatre somewhere to control dispersion.
These little boxes will work great on top of G subs or even better if you can find some Martin Audio F2B cabinets to go beneath them---Would not bother with the W bins as they just will not keep up with the RS802s at all.

As Robbo says, this is the high & mid section of a VRS/RS 800 system. They were actually designed as installation cabinets but at least one company bought a set and fitted them with wheelboards (or may have been wheeled lids) to use on the road.

Original drivers were the JBL 2425J or 2426J, and the Martin M1221 mid driver which had a sealed basket (plastic windows glued into the openings). Later production used the M1223 which had a different outer suspension.
If your mids are M1231's they might have been fitted as replacements or an upgrade, they have a bigger magnet (Martin Monster Mid) and slightly higher output.

The crossovers between the 12" and 1" are passive only, unlike the RS/VRS 800 which was switchable for active or passive.

The low crossover point for the mid was 250Hz and any of the horn loaded Martin bins will work (other than the WSX or S1/S2 which are really subs), or indeed any decent kick bin.

The L1540 / PA100-375 is a well respected 15" drive unit and you can get them reconed by ATC in Stroud for a very reasonable price. Same goes for the 12" mids, which are custom versions of the ATC PA75-314.

£100 for the pair sounds like a bargain to me, even if they need some refurbishment.
