Hi Guys,
After some opinions and advice. I am putting together a small ish rig, that so far consists of 8 X F1 218 subs to cover 100hz ish and below. And I have 4 x EV mid tops that have a 10 + 2" + 1" Long Throw design that work from 250Hz upwards. I am wanting some cabs to fill in the gap and provide some "Kick". Anyone any recommendations? The rig will mainly be used for outdoor Events, playing House and Dance, and maybe the odd band through it. Many Thanks in advance, Andy

Hi P,
Do you have a design, or Make and model, or photo? Your description is a little Vague. Cheers, Andy.

I've run F218's higher than that, the spec cross to the res 4/5 is around 114 and you can go a bit higher. When you take into account the cost of making/buying a dedicated kick section, amping it, extra cable and set up, and having to sort out extra delays/processing it might be cheaper and simpler and (sound better) to sell on you're tops and get something that will go that low, there's plenty out there. just a thought.

Hi,
Yes the 218's get a bit "Honky" if you go up to 125HZ. Ive found optimum is about 90 or 100, but that is just trial and error and personal preference. I have some options, and like the EV's, as they are nice and crisp and accurate. It definitely needs some 15's on the rig. It actually sounds OK, with Reggae and Bassline played through it. There's still something missing, but its not as obvious on these. I like the TMS2's but think the EV's are a bit brighter. Again just a personal opinion. Thanks, Andy.

+1 Or what about the HD15? Other than that, a simple reflex, or even sealed box would cover the frequencies you need without having to build anything too complex. |

The HD15's would probably do the trick. A simple ported cab probably wouldn't have the desired throw in line with everything else. Projection is important with the rig being used outside.

15" on straight FLH, should do 100 - 250hz with ease, Given correct driver, chamber.

You don't want to be using hd15 to cover as high as 250hz.
It's a hard range to cover, bph designs mostly struggle past 180. Straight horn designs like martin 215 can do it well though. |

I've said this time and time before on here, but please do not build a BPH. regardless of how nice some claim them to be, they truly suck at actual quality of sound. They are a high Q device only capable of adding some punch to a system which is good in sub heavy genres which benefit from this like Tek or techno. Try to mix a live band on them, you will always struggle with cleaning up the low mids.
If you are doing horn loaded, accept the fact that your cabs will be slightly large and just build the straight horn. Otherwise stick to reflex and be done with it. You will regret it if you build BPH and want to use them for anything else than the genres susggested above.

Best regards,
Teun. |
