A little nervous about this one...
Mixing for a live band on Friday in a venue with a 96db restriction. Power cuts when limit is exceeded! Its a corporate party so I don't think it will need to be stupidly loud. But i'm worried the drum kit alone could knock the power off in this big echo-e hall! Band play pop/rock covers. I'm taking 2 x double 18'' and 2 x double 12'' +6.5'' +2'' tops. But obviously this can be turned down.. loud drums and cheering crowd could be more diffcult. Any advice? Thanks

Every venue I've taken my band to, which had a noise monitor in place, has had a seperate set of power supplies which weren't attached to the monitor... I always drop it into the initial conversation - ie. "ha, so where do you REALLY want me to plug all of my sensitive audio equipment into - i.e Where it's not going to get zapped because your cheapo noise restrictor chops the electricity?" - Venue managers often just have these monitoring systems in place for show!
You're right - I reckon you'd be lucky to get a drumkit into your noise restriction!! |

Correction, you'd never get my drummer into your noise restriction :)

Oh...and the only other thing I can think of for this, is a set of Roland V-Drums... Most Drummers hate them, sound engineers hate them quite alot, but one thing is for sure, when they're too loud, it's brilliant being able to turn them down/off :)

A bit naughty but I usually take some extension cables, find a plug that isn't controlled by noise level cutout. As it will be very difficult to keep a live band with a drumkit within those limits. Then just use a bit of common sense, keep the levels down as much as poss. Tell the band if they play too loud the power will cut out and ruin their gig, which will help to rein them in a little. Everyone's happy I've done it that way loads of times never had a problem or complaint. I suppose the other way is to use a big enough UPS(expensive though) that can hold out long enough for the power to kick back in. |

Yeah if you have an enthusiastic drummer with a power snare, they are so fxxxin loud! Then the rest of the band have to turn up, to keep up! |

That's not a bad idea, I was thinking a similar thing for a bit... Generator outside!
I'm just going to ask verrrrry nicely to have it bypassed! I'll look like a right tit if the power goes off every 5 seconds!

And I don't want to know what kind of pops and bangs will be coming through the system when everything turns on at once

Yeah, I was wondering if there was any risk of damage to amps or speakers with the power cutting in and out?

Yeah and as the sound guy you'll get the blame if it's a bad gig! |

If the room is big, try and setup away from the restrictor. I encounter these regularly but have never actually seen one cut the power, even when the red light is sustained...
Another option is to go round with a large air-horn and find sockets that are not connected.
