Just completed 4 MT121 with T Geese as part of a bigger project. Used natural wood stain and poly for the "old shcool" look. Also check out the custom tweeter box.

Used a combination of Maple color and Chestnut for the horn. and then 3 coats of minwax poly. Definitely a lot of work but worth it.

+1 on the nice work. It does take ages to get a good deep high-gloss finish but thats a great effect.

Just out of interest how many layers/grades did you go through?

Had to do about 5 layers + 3 coats of poly. Birch is definitely not the easiest type of wood to stain.

Any chance you could put up a close-up picture of the end-grain?

Was there any particular reason you went for a separate stain rather than an all-in-one polyurethane staining varnish? I've never tried finishing birch to that level before.
