I'll post close up when I have a chance.  stain/poly combos don't penetrate the wood grain as much as stain alone and since most of the color pigment stays in the varnish itself, any scratches or gouge will be visible.

this is true, very good point........ ive done a few cabs in clear before but not stained any.....

Do you take this rig out on the road? Seems like making hard work for yourself, If I went to the trouble of finishing cabs to this high standard I would be scared to move them in case they got scratched!!
