the vegas make too much a fuss about it being heatsinking in their designs ..mostly slamming on the emphasis for marketings sake alone. in most of their designs its meerly that the chamber is capped with a ally plate allowing heat transference from the trapped air within, which usually is substantial enough to segnificantly aleviate long term thermal buildup.
Although cerwin made alot of fuss about their stroker technology aleggedly venting forward (?) out of cone in one variant ..and notably out the back of the pole piece out a tube out the cab in the 21"s ..the nasty chinese drivers ive seen the more recent 18"s loaded with are pretty conventional drivers. Nothing special & from experience pretty nasty things to listen to. Its a shame when the box the drivers come in, is possibly better than the drivers themselfs; but this happens abit in the industry now. to be honest, as it stands the coupling is satisfactory thermally, if you want to try more, mill some aluminum bar so that it snugly fits in drivers pole piece ...mill out the middle and drill holes radially round the base of it outside so that airflow isnt obsstructed & then devise a means to couple this to the aluminum. did something like that in my single lab variants to great effect, in the middle of a tight snail shell they kinda needed it; but benefits here may not justify it. |

Where am I suppose to place the driver in the bin? Also where is the "half moon" suppose to be placed? I'm really new to horn designs so these questions might sound a bit of stupid. Ive made a 3D model of the bin but this doesn't help me much figuring out where to place the driver or the half moon.
I would also like to know how the aluminum plate could affect the driver cooling without being directly attached to the driver itself. |

driver goes in rear chamber... behind access panel?.. half moon is the baffle (in front of driver) at the start of the horn. maybe you should try a easier design if you're struggling with this.

I continue to be supprised, amazed and somewhat flattered at how interest in this design has caught on and is continueing to clock up users. thanks folks :)
Btw would anyone like a complimentry mid top to go with these designing ? ...im thinking a coaxial midtop horn with a centrally mounted tweeter horn of 1"-1.5" with a 12"-15" driver behind for the mid/midbass. i much prefer 12"s as they often remain better controlled at mid freqs and on a horn can still do the kick element very nicely.. thoughts folks ? I may request soon that im allowed to create a new thread in the root speakerbuilding forum to tidy up the info from this thread and tidy up the clutter here abit. also got some revisions to offer up for someone to try on an existing pair which should improve response a little more and help cool the driver further; itll be an easily retrofittable mod so exhisting users can mod where its proven beneficial :) Right, back to afew other things here :) |

I'd be interested in any mods! I've just built another twelve, all loaded with the fane 1500's!
Although I have noticed when running them hard the sides of the rear chambers get very hot when we come to de rigging them, not sure how much the driver will take to be honest? All mine have the ply hatches as i wasn't sure that just an ally plate would make much difference. Thanks for the design nineleaves! Very happy with the cabs and will be taking a stack of 12 with stasys 3's over to france for some outdoor fun next month ;)

aah yeah, you will sometime get unlucky and cook the drivers, i make hatches out of aluminum for a good reason (the ammount of heat wood can hold in is rather scary).. mods concerned should allow the use of ply hatches.. rear chamber will gain some venting in the right places, but doing so will make the tuning of those ports and the rear chamber volume abit more 'particular' ...sweetspots will have to be established for each driver folks use. sealed rear chamber carrys advantage that it doesnt care too much about the drivers used.
stack of 12 ?..holy crap :) i have to hear some of this sometime, never seen that many togeather. watch this space, got someone up for building the mid tops to compliment these.. so a complete package for people to build should be done, will be taking surveys in on 12's that people like in horns, weighing up the merits and aiming for one in the default design which is both reasonably efficient & high power handling whilst being an affordable choice for those without quite so deep pockets :) Edited by nineleaves - 21 March 2012 at 8:29pm |
