So, im selling all my kit, and for what?

my new rig, 12v supplied by a chopped up car jump start pack with a big silly cap bigger than the battery, 200w (but blatantly not) amp powering 2 6inch parcel shelf halfords rubbish in a chipboard boombox held together with nonails, 300watt jenson amp with high pass set at about 90hz running a 10inch in a reflex box, or another more serious 10inch in a bandpass box (deathbox variant) for lower bass (heavier but makes a good seat). oh yeah, a nice 80's looking crossover i found on ebay as well.

sorry massive picture im bad at this.

anyway, its fun and its cost about 100 quid or so not including bits i already had - credit crunch special!

because of the crossover, the 'mid-tops' can blast out far beyond what you would expect for 20 quid at halfords as there isnt much excursion. the bass is kicky with the reflex box, and rounded and lower with the deathbox bandpass one...

good for barbeque's and whatnot.

so, rate my rig!

this season seems to be the one for 12 volt pa! good skills there, it's always a boon when most of what you need is squirrelled away in random boxes, that's certainly how all of my most interesting projects have come about!

Any info on that crossover? Spec/cost/can you get more?

Looks beans! Although the exposed electronics worries me a lil bit?

cut list and spec sheet LOL

as you say its pretty much bonfire fuel.

The crossover is a CR78 pyramid unit apparently, i just searched on ebay for a car audio crossover.

With a small system like this - barely bigger than a boom-box, everything will be a compromise.

Exposed electrics isnt a worry - its all just 12v car stuff, and since the whole lot isnt going to put out more than 200watts anyway its not like any of it is drawing huge current.

The whole lot (thats with the 4th order bandpass bin, the reflex box and the mids) + battery and capacitor fit into a granny trolley.

When you turn it up the reflex bin cant keep up. The driver handles 100w but is very low SPL compared to a proper PA driver. The bandpass bin has a much better hertz driver which is another silly plastic car jobby but has a much lighter cone and dual spider design, also handles 250w and is prevented from over excursion by the cab design.

instuctions to build:

you will have to build, then tune. The tuning will have to be very precise and yo uwill never be able to work it out in advance when building on this small a scale, with anything like this level of innacuracy. Build all the boxes such that they are bigger than needed and then decrease the volume gradually (physically) through a combination of cutting bits off and wedging bits in, etc. Once you get the preferred sound. nonails everywhere.

eeeek 5 amp mains cable on an amp with a 25amp fuse .. no wonder the reflex bin aint doing it , upgrade it to 6mm cable minimum .. that should help... nice idea though!!

Nice work

Those jump starters only have small batteries in them mind. You might wanna invest in a leisure battery to get more than an hour or so's use

yeah, id usually use an old car battery but I only wanted it for small volume at picnics so far.Im going to get a nice sealed lead acid job, i can remember all kinds off accidents with a medium sized storage battery array I had as a student, fun times.

i need to make a power unit which has the battery and the cap in it in a nice box, currently my thing looks like a bomb, which isnt ideal.

@johnnyPyro well spotted :-)
I figured it would be ok  because the amp just never draws 25amps - if it was even close it would pop the cone straight out of the 10inch drivers im using.

People here on this site are really cool and all but I think the thing some people miss who have been round a while and have massive rigs is just the sheer fun of having a bit of portable noise, without the fuss of a generator, van, police, etc..

oh yeah:

I was trying to work out, what is the 'correct' socket/plug combo for 25a 12v cabling? I could use cigarette lighter plugs but they are big and clumsy, i have used hard-drive molex connectors which is obviously not the way to go..

(for one of my older projects) I used 16awg cable, electricians blocks and speaker "banana" connectors when I wanted a plug system, all worked well for me :)

this is just pure fun.  i love it.  and that power pack definately looks like a bomb.

for power connectors you can get an in-line 2 piece 230v 13a connector with three pins.  diy shops and electrical suppliers always have them.  sometimes black and sometimes orange rubber.  looking at the actual poles, they gotto be able to handle more than 13a, and i have used one for ages with no problems.

REFLEX ALL THE WAY.... (however, im playing with horns again...) That ok Mister Valiant? :)

when it peaks it will draw more than 5 amps , worth going that bit heavier and stop any voltage loss, youll be suprised how something as silly like a 1v loss can do on car audio gear.. if you want a decent battery go for AGM (absorbed glass matt)they are totally sealed can be laid on there side etc, they have a good depth of discharge to charge rate, id say about 38ah would do and wouldnt be too heavy, great batteries, i have 18 of the 200ah jobbies on my boat Wink squadron are one of the better makes shouldnt cost no more than 50-60 quid. pretty good idea for remote places, well done
