    Posted: 04 July 2013 at 10:06am
Hi all

With my previous speakers, setting limiters was just to keep my amps from clipping since the powerhandling of the drivers was very hight.

With my new Floodlight system, i have enough power to fry very expensive drivers.

Speakers:
TSW-718 - 800 watt RMS @ 4 ohm
TFL-760ht - mid= 250 watt rms @ 8 ohm, hi-mid = 100 watt rms @ 16 ohm, hi = 50 watt rms @ 16 ohm

Amps & DSP:
Omnidrive FDS-388
Sub amp - Ram Bux 3.4 = 2x1750 watts @ 4ohm. Voltage gain = 33.1 DB Sensitivity @ 4ohm = 2,25v
Mid amp - Ram Bux 2.0 = 2x950 watts @ 4ohm. Voltage gain = 33.1db Sensitivity @ 4ohm = 1,33v
Hi-mid + hi amp = Labgruppen FP2400Q = 4x370 watts @ 8 ohm Voltage gain = 32db

Can someone please point me in the right direction. Using different spreadsheets found online gives me different results.
Thanks for your time.

Far from an expert pal but from a mathematical approach, I used the following model, however, I have never had this verified.  So please do not take this as gospel as I wouldn't want you fry your drivers becuase of my incorrect calculations.  I just hope it helps point you in the right direction:

Voltage rms speaker @ X ohms
Reference Voltage 0.78
50 RMS @ 16R  HI 28.28
100 RMS @16R Mid HI 40.00
250 RMS @8R Mid 44.72
800 RMS @4R Bass 56.57
Transducer Voltage limit 50 RMS @ 16 31.24 dbu
Transducer Voltage limit 100 RMS @16 34.26 dbu
Transducer Voltage limit 250 RMS @8R 35.22 dbu
Transducer Voltage limit 800 RMS @8R 37.27 dbu
Lab Gruppen Amp gain =  32.00 db
Limiting Threshold for HI = (0.76) dbu
Limiting Threshold for Mid HI =  2.26 dbu
RAM Bux 2.0 = 33.10 db
Limiting Threshold for Mid = 2.12 dbu
RAM Bux 3.4 = 33.10 db
Limiting Threshold for Bass = 4.17 dbu

"Transducer Voltage limit 800 RMS @8R        37.27     dbu"
.... 8R should be 4R? Just a spelling error or calculation error?

I also have the same problem. I will probably develop a Javascript to do the calculations for me. I will put it online and post the link here (probably in the weekend), if I manage do do something useful.

Sorry spelling error on my part.  This is how I done the calculation:

Transducer Voltage limit 800 RMS @4R = 20 log (SQRT(800*4)/0.775) = 37.27

Maybe one of the expert members will come along and confirm.

Thanks for all the good information.

Just one more noobish question.

Are all calculations and numbers done with the amps turnes all the way up?

Simon: those setting look correct to me and the formular is correct  You do need to remember that most limiters wont allow for decimal numbers (Sometimes maybe .5's) So it is always the safest practise to round down.
Chille: Turbosound have produced an excel file with one in already. If you ignore the turbosound stuff it works for any other speaker/amp combo. www.turbosound.com/upload-files/File/technical/dsp/dsp.xls

How many boxes per channel ?
DMZ. "The bass was intense. Girls were literally running up to stand next to the subs"

Turbo boxes have very conservative rms ratings, i routinely run them at program power not rms power, the following is from the floodlight data sheet:

LMF: 250 watts r.m.s., 500 watts program, 625 watts peak
HMF: 100 watts r.m.s., 200 watts program, 250 watts peak
HF: 50 watts r.m.s., 100 watts program, 125 watts peak
Recommended amplifier power: LMF: 500 watts @ 8 ohms, HMF: 200 watts @ 16 ohms, HF:
100 watts @ 16 ohms

Im running my floods off the following amps
100w at 16ohm per side for the HF
275w at 16ohm per side for HMF
550w at 8ohm per side for LMF

I occasionally can flick a clip light when pushing the system to the max and the floods are fine. You wont need to limit any of your amps mate.
