Hello, I have recently built two cabs, each containing a 300w driver at 4ohms, and was planning on wiring them into parallel (using speakOn connections) what amp would I need to accommodate these two speakers?

Something that's happy with a two ohm load.

Or you could run them one each side of a 2 channel amp as 300 watts isn't huge then they're only 4 ohm...

Can you tell us the make and model of the drivers you plan to use?

hey

First of all, you need to double check what the 300w means for your driver. AES/RMS power handling? Program power handling (usually twice AES?). Peak power handling (usually 4x aes)?

Assuming it's AES power rating, the general idea is that you use an amp with twice the power (or equivalent to the "program" or real music rating).  By using an amp of this size this allows you to supply your speakers with a good amount of power, but you still have some headroom left over, so aren't running the amp full tilt to its limits and creating unwanted distortion or harmonics in your sound.  With live music that is fairly dynamic, you can run the amp till the clip lights are just very occasionally flashing without too much trouble, with pre-recorded/compressed music or very heavy bass music you'll want to back off just a little to stop too much heat building up.

So you'd either be looking at an amp that can supply around 1200w into a 2 ohm load (and is 2 ohm stable) if you connect them in parallel, or an amp that can supply around 600w at 4 ohms each side if you connect them one each to the left and right channels of an amp.

K

Why canĀ“t you just drive them off a single amp, ie one cab per channel? Amps that can (reliably) do over 1kW/channel into 2 ohms are usually more expensive than one that will do 500W/600W into 4 ohm.

Everybody has to start somewhere. Those cheapy Skytec drivers tend not to be very durable, so I would definitely stay out of clip with whatever amp you go for, and avoid 2 ohm loads.

I hear good things about the Berhinger toroidal amps, maybe a second hand EP2500?
