Anyone used and can recommend one?  Need a couple of quite simple single sided PCB boards made...

Just bare PCB's?

The main issue you will find is that the prices for small board quantities are pretty horrific due to the setup costs.

Places like http://www.pcbcart.com/quote are probably as good an option as any

can you not get em made using a desktop cnc... There are a few places were you can take your plans in and hire the machine for an hour at a time. There is a place in Exeter that ive used for small prototype stuff...

http://pcbshopper.com/

Most of the Chinese services are pretty good now, there are various reviews around. For small scale hobby stuff there isn't much point in going anywhere else.

If the boards are simple you could always solder them onto veroboard type substrates

I have been using PCB Pool ( aka Beta layouts) for years for low volume/one off boards

They also do laser cut screen printed or engraved front panels and 3D printing

they can provide free CAD software for designing the front panels.

The PCBs are made in Ireland and the front panels in Germany.

Single boards always are expensive.  You'll probably find you could put the quantity up to 5-10 and the price wouldn't change.

those prices are about right for one off and 10 off pcbs of that size, with 2 layers, solder mask and silk screen board... the price is within a few quid of what PCB-pool would quote.

Low volume quality boards are always expensive as the setup costs are so high.
