So I'm currently in need of a fairly cheap crossover, I've been searching around and found the Samson S3 and the Peavey PV35xo, both are around the same price range.

Does anyone have any experience with either of these crossovers? I guess I could stretch to a DBX 234XL if both of these are a pile of rubbish however I'd like to see what everyone else thinks before I spend any more money.

I love how both of these models feature mute buttons which I could use as kill-switches like the ones built into reggae pre-amps. Plus the Samson has a built in limiter, although the Peavey can stretch to 5-way mono which seems really handy if I want to gain another section.

What do you guys think? Smile

Thank you!

For the price of a new dbx 234xl, you could get a practically brand new DCX!
My dcx sold for 175 quid in mint condition, might you want to consider one of those?

the sampson s3 is an ok unit, i used it relyably for a few years, it did what i wanted, it had one feature that i needed which was that i could ross over from mains to subs at 40 hz..was for studio/home use and i only needed subs belowabout 38 hz..not many other crossovers on the market can do this. for most pro audio needs, thats totally unnecessary.

the peavey would get my vote for build quality and the feel of the knobs.  i dont remember if the xover adjust on the 35xo have detented knobs like the sampson does..it is really handy for making sure your settings are exact and remain so.

the behrdcx is honestly not as good quality as either of the units your looking at.  sure you get more flexibility but..is it worth the cut in sound quality and rise in noise floor? not to me.  its an ok unit for starter set up where space and eq, limiter, xover is needed, it sounds like all you need is the crossover feature.

Samson S3 is an excellent unit IMO. Sounds great, easy to use and well made. Limiter is v. useful as well!

Haven't used the peavey though Smile

I don't believe the Peavey has time alignment either. If it's an issue.

Thanks for the feedback guys, and no the peavey doesn't have any delay so would this be a big problem if I was eventually using this on a a pair of scoops?

Depends what your looking at budget wise.
I know you can get the old Klark Teknik delar, eq Xover units for extremely good cost now and they are wicked units. Personally im using a DBX driverack which i would reccommend and i use an EV speaker management unit for smaller stuff/hires and bits and bobs.
Here are some links to the KT and EV units
Note: im not selling these, just posting eBay links as reference

I love my EV DX38, i've got it powering a few subs in a club in north london along with a crown 3600, the pair are sitting next to 3-a-side funktion one subs and mine blow them away! :)
