This was the first really expensive mixer I bought, I paid well over a grand for it in the early 80's!
GLI3990 really nice to use when it worked , but you needed a bike to get from one end of the crossfade to the other (this is a downloaded pic)
Citronic SM607 still hard to beat for sound quality from the days when citronic made quality kit!
about the mid 70's

Great idea for a topic
I tried to bid on that Soundout mixer was prepered to go to £100 for it That is rare as ****
But the seller wouldnt answer emails and it was collection only
I picked up this one on Ebay recently Citronic Trent II mixer well used as can be seen
I collect old Citronic gear This one was a great addition to my collection worked perfect just a few noisy controls

Thats part of a Trent console it should have a SL1200 of either side of it on a metal frame?
the trent was a great idea from citronic but it failed because the muppets didn't put a crossfade on the mixer?
I modified a couple of these by removing the deck stars (which no one bothered with anyway) and cut a crossfade in place of them, bit crude but it worked!

Could this be the first ever GLI?
This has to be the perfect mixer for the red line Dj!
And these were quite popular in the disco's in london in the 70's
Couldn't really have a vintage mixer thread without one of these, I have used one, installed 3, but never owned one this has to be the mixer most Dj's want, and even though I've sold off most of my kit if one comes along I'm having it! I have a plan to got out for a drink with jblman get him pissed and get this one when his defences are down!! Lol

As colin says, the Supernova..one of only 300 made, this is in the rare factory-built case/plinth..most were sold just as a chassis...it also has the Penny and giles fader option.
Another from the collection....Simon Harris' Formula sound PM80 with crossfader module,Simon used to take this in lots of clubs in the 80.s.Chris Hill,Pete Tong and Robbie Vincent all played though this mixer.
Citronic Tamar console with the "microprocessor" auto fade gizmo...
And of course an Avon (same as a Hawaii, but with built in 2x150w amp),probually the best all-round Citronic console of the 80's.

Taking it back to 1990-1992 and from Korea we have the 'Inkel MX880E'
The case is plastic, but quite rugged (it's been kicking around the house for a while). A nice pop up stand, that actually is quite solid for what looks like a coat hanger in the pic! In fact the whole feel is solid, with good pot's and faders.
When it was working it has quite a clear sound, no nasty stuff. Then it just died, so I will get around to opening it up soon (yeah right!). As you can see it has no cross fader, but to be honest I never really use them. Feel I get a better mix with the 'both hands on two fader' old skool stylee . It's got a good set of input options, fx send and return on all channels with an fx master. Stereo L R masters, two band EQ (High/Low) that kills/cuts quite well. 3 inputs switch-able on all six channels, first four are Mic, Mic ATT, Line. The last two are Phono, CD, Line, and then Phono, Video, Line. So basically a whole load of mic and line in's . Seems to be trying to be a mix of a DJ and home studio mixer, I like it.
edit: Forgot to say the last two channels are mono/stereo switch-able. So thus it is called an 8 channel mixer.

I had a similar problem with my spirit mixer. I hooked up a behringer tube preamp after the mixer to provide additional gain. It also has a parameteric eq to boot!!!! Not fond of alot of behringer gear but some of their gear aint half bad if your on a budget.

The GLI mixers were fabulous, I used one in my residency at Legends for a couple of years from 1982. They were imported into the UK by a guy called Greg James (good friend of Les Adams) and he put them into the Regine's Club (later Roof Garden) in Kensington. Notable feature was there were no standard faders, big volume control knobs and a cross fader. Very well made.

Was a wicked mixer when they worked, I had no end of trouble with mine (also supplied by Greg) but when it worked it was a dream to use but the very long crossfade took some getting used too! I replaced it in the finish with a PD9000 gli which I think was the model for the early Numark stuff

When looking at a Supa Nova, you have to remember the date they were made and what was around at the time, and what was required. Don't forget Froggy, with his experience, advised on the facility and layout. Matt made it happen. I did the 4 way x/o which I was proud of at the time.

I'm with Eddie. Never got a Matamp to sound better then a PM. I fixed a fair few Matamp products back in the day. I was never as impressed as others. In those days as well as building audio electronics I repaired much top end hi fi, so I had plenty of toys to test them with. Sadly nowadays Formula Sound mixers are 'not good enough' for some wallies. They can only 'dj' with a Pioneer as stated on a rider, so they all copy it.

Crikey, it went for all of £4.40, and double as much to post!
I wouldn't have wanted it myself, but seeing these sort of prices does make me wonder how many people discover old bits of kit in their sheds/atics/wherever, do a quick Google and discover they'll fetch next to nothing so dump it as it's not worth the effort?
Who knows what gems are being junked.....

I've never seen a Disco 2 before. It looks like it used the standard Millbank modules as fitted to their PA stuff. I guess a date of 1970 or so.
It must have been the fore-runner of the Disco 3, which I have a couple of. Crossfaders were considered a novelty at the time and weren't very popular.

I'm not sure if it was just urban legend, but the MM was always considered to stand for Mickey Mouse.
The quality of that model can't be compared to any modern mixer. It used 741 opamps which were as noisy as a noisy thing. The faders also had a tendency to be noisy too. I modded one by changing all the opamps, transformer balancing the inputs and using an external power supply. It wasn't a bad little mixer then (by the days standard) and I always thought that the 4 band eq was very usable.
While I'm here, does this count as vintage yet?

Anyway- Whilst photographing the albums I came across this puppy, It's by Matt Munro, Have a look at the hardware in the photo! Nice job, that sets the Studer off perfectly. You rarely see A779's about at all, let alone in that condition.

|
Steve, you were right about the MM mixer, The original idea was to name it Mickey Mouse, But of course, he came up against a very large brick wall.

Hi all , I'm new here . Thought I'd make a contribution here .
Don't know if they are known in te UK ( I'm from belgium ) but they have been very popular over here . Very good quality and sound . Many of them are still in use .
I recently bought 2 of them for 50,- euro's each ( will be approx. 60 pounds ) .

Here's another one . Also made in belgium , as is the stanford , hugely expencive at the time . But they were special . Vetelec did not use normal faders , they had a system that excisted of a sliding magnet going over a row of "reed relais" .
They used to promote their mixing desks floating on a few pieces of cork in a watertank !
If my memory serves me well , they were modular ( same as Marelco , also belgian manufacturing ) . Will see if I find some pictures .

I've one of these Allen and Heath MOD 2's, under a few things and on the 'todo' list: not certain of the date but I seem to remember them being available in the 70's:
not the best of images so the same one shown in a pic on Allen and Heath's website: http://www.allen-heath.com/uk/Products/pages/ProductDetails.aspx?catId=&ProductId=MODSeries&SubCatId=" rel="nofollow - A&H MOD series
It's the one with the patchbay and the same colour as the MOD3 in the pic Mik

I did think about it but have no use for it, I have an LX7 still in it's box that gets very little use so can't justify the Matamp.

This is the console it sold for £107.98

I'd say so, he/they had a very high feedback so prob a dealer, Yes Greg I was after the turntables, I really want the QRK galaxy's and would pay a handsome sum for a pair of them (in good working order of course) but these would have done for the time being. Not having to much luck with ebay lately.
