I am building two Beyma SB18 with Beyma 18P1200Nd. The material is 18 mm scandinavian birch. I hope to be finished in a week or two.

First cab nearly finished. I will tomorrow make a test and compare the SB18 with a Punisher loaded with Ciare 12.00 SW.

I made a test this evening and used a QSC PLX 3402 as amplifier for subs and a Crown XS 4300 for EV SX 300. I connected a Beyma SB18 and a Punisher to the QSC on each channel (700w at 8 ohm) and from 30-120Hz.

The room was a bit small (4x8 m). The difference was not so great between the subs! The sound was equally high with a good kick in both subs but the SB18 sounded better at the lowest frequencies (30-50 Hz)

We built dual one...A pair outside per side ( equal to 4 SB18 each side) driven with 1500W each (driver) kick at 100 foot easy. Bottom are great, no need for extra sub. We did an arena this NYE with 4 double each side and this was enought for 6000 peoples...130 db in the middle of the crowd in ''C''...Pretty impressive for the size...We load them with RCF 18N401...Easy to get here. We measure 6mm of excurtion in one side, seem to be the same when driver kick inside..Just made some RTA this afternoon, will try to post it tomorow..

Thumbs Up have emailed the UK distributors, seems they dont usually import the speaker...

But, this compact design fulfills the same SPL (and freq range) as a PD186 reflex. And it is TINY. Admittedly it does need a fair bit of power, and the speaker isnt that cheap - but still Big smile

KABOOM... I got my first one built.... building my second at present it's loaded with an old 300w 18" becker I had lying around.... Even with the becker the damn thing sounds monstrous...

Nice low end rumble handles d&b great and it covers some nice distance 20 -30 ft easy... I might be crazy but to me it sounds like a much larger cab.... a scoop or something similar...

Man I can't wait to load em both with celestion ftr 184080FD woofers... This single SB18 sure performs... Still haven't put in the pole mount as yet but I'll have some pics up for ya soon....

I'm very happy with the beyma SB18... should be nice to see the patrons reactions come next week

I've got the same question. I know the top and bottom have been "shortened" to get rid of the built in handles shown in the original plans. But, by how much? Thanks!

On the orginal plans on Beymas site  http://profesional.beyma.com/ingles/recursos.php - http://profesional.beyma.com/ingles/recursos.php  the PDF-file isnt very helpful. You can instead use the CAD-file to get all the figures. I used a freeware (DWG-viewer http://www.tucows.com/preview/332734 - http://www.tucows.com/preview/332734  ) for that. Dont forget to calibrate before you start to measure. If you use the rectangle option can you get both the height and the width on the CAD-plan.

Notice that I changed the front angle of the baflle. Picture 2. That makes the baffle longer than 523 mm. All the pieces in the cab is 504 mm in width (includes bottom, top and backside). The sides are 540x738 mm. The reinforcment pieces 4 and 5 are the same (443 mm).
Here is my modified plan.

The grills are made of full metal sheet and punched by an automated machine. They cost me the same as standard grills, so why not add some signature? Big smile The amp all D-Amp, my old design. I use 1 of 6000W/chanel/4 ohms for sub and 2X 2000W/chanel/4ohms for lo mid and hi mid and a 400w/chanel/4ohms for 2'' driver. By the way, this is my custom horn too! Very loud and very clean small rig!

They cosy me about 50$ USD each, same price for sub or top, same job at tooling...I'm building right now 4 more sub and 2 more top, I want to run 3 bass 2 top per side. I see somewher an HR for this sub, but when I RTA them, I was really surprised...They go to 40Hz flat, with a small ''hole'' in the 60hz region, maybe about -4 db and go nicely to 125Hz. The -6db is at 36hz. Under 40hz, they fall like a monkey face..This is with 2 sub coupled. I have another version, but each section is 1 over the other one and I mirrored the sub, but I dont know why, it's not the same result as configured like that...The other thing, I made a small modification to get the sub same wide as my top...Maybe that's the key!

Pope help me with both my builds I getting together another pair and they do hit really hard for cab this size... plus I'm sure all you guys have heard your bass disappear after you walk a few meters away from your stack... these SB18's covers a nice distance even if you're play'n some d&b....

Right now it's carnival time here so it's pure soca vibes... I did 2 events, both indoors with 175 to 200 patrons each.. I used four X15  and two SB18 subs.... it was MADDDDDD... good kick and the bass rolled off of them nicely one host ask that I low down the bass a bit since his roof was vibrating way too much for his comfort...   LOL...

I used Pope build specs if you were wondering...

I dont know, that's little volume compare to back volume of speaker and troat...The version we built have the 2 handle inside the back volume and take only 1.4 litter. We repack the enclosure to fit width of our top, but we keep all volume and horn path lenght the same. The enclosure is just wider and less depth to keep same front size of top. The angle are not the same, we had to adjust to keep the same volume and path lenght. Overall size of our enclosure are 44'' with, 20.75'' height and 29'' deep for double 18''.

Posted By: fredos666
Date Posted: 05 February 2010 at 4:56pm
Also we did'nt use the double pannel on each side. Middle pannel have equal pressure on booth side, so we did'nt double it and the panel inside of back volume was replaced by a 90 degree 1'' double brace, between the handle.

All,
I´m new to this form. And i am very glad i found it.
This design looks very interesting. How critical is the choise of driver?
Does "any" driver work and its just a matter of sound pressure or?
The reason i´m asking is i have a pair of beyma 18g400 and 18g50 over, could they work?

Thanks

these cabs look like a '50hz and up' job to me.  and very expensive drivers, for what i imagine will need an awful lot of power and eq boost below 50hz.  At what frequency does the horn start to improve efficiency over the same sized reflex cab?  I imagine a 186 in a reflex cab will go lower and smoother to a higher point than these (while costing half the price).  Am I wrong?  is this working in the same way a tapped horn works?  has anyone else noticed the horn being less than a meter long?  am i missing something?

-------------
REFLEX ALL THE WAY.... (however, im playing with horns again...) That ok Mister Valiant? :)

I just typed an incredibly long, interesting and entertaining story about this cabinet, before it got lost due to strange coincidence. All I will say this time is: Look at these types of enclosures as if they were sixth order band pass devices (6th order BP), like the X1 if you will.

Ohh...no..wait:

Dependant on the exact tuning the PD186 might go lower. It will sound better up high as well. Inside this cabinet it will be 3..4 dB louder. Never build the SB18, just a similar cabinet 8 liters more in volume. Dependant on the exact design it might be 3...4 dB more efficient at 60 Hz..50 Hz...or, yes... even at 40 Hz. It will be not much to listen to, at 90 Hz and up and drop dead or just down above 150-250 Hz orso, where the second "resonance" peak is centered.

Best regards Johan

Where you satified with the design (similar to SB18).
How critical do yo think the choise of driver is?
What parameter in a driver should you look for in particaly.
Beyma recomends 3 diffrent type of driver with diffrent TS parameters.

Posted By: Tbernard
Date Posted: 02 March 2010 at 8:25pm
the choice of driver is critical. must be similar parameters. I think this was discussed earlier in the thread, also read the thread where the plots are...link is on one of these pages.

I'd like to know if its worth it to use the 15sw1300nd instead of the 15P1200nd version in the 15/1 plans.  Specs say it is capable down to 25hz instead of 30 on the 1200. Its only 20USD more.

You could say that, in some respect it exceeded my aspectations. I needed a few times to adjust to it's sound though.

Quote How critical do yo think the choise of driver is?
That depends on the particular design. The other design does work with random 15" bass drivers quite well, as it was designed to do so. Actually even putting an 18" driver inside works suprisingly often.

Because the SB18 has a larger throat chamber, shorter horn and thus also smaller horn parameters I suspect it to work less effectively with random drivers, requiring a certain set of T/S-parameters to get the flattest frequency response. With this particular set of correct parameters I aspect it to work just as well.
To make the SD18 work with a larger set of drivers I would lengthen the horn path and (also indirectly by this) reduce the throat chamber.

Quote What parameter in a driver should you look for in particaly
In all I would suggest to look for typical basreflex drivers, meaning medium to medium-high Qts (0,3 - 0,38), medium Vas and typical Fs. Lengthening the horn path while reducing the throat chamber should make it work better with lower Qts drivers.
 .
Unfortunately the simulation doesn't tell the whole story, I say it has some standard defects with regards to measurements.

Best regards Johan

Quote I'd like to know if its worth it to use the 15sw1300nd instead of the 15P1200nd version in the 15/1 plans.  Specs say it is capable down to 25hz instead of 30 on the 1200. Its only 20USD more
Regardless of what driver you're going to load it with, do not expect 25 Hz performance.  The lowest usable frequency in this case is much more enclosure dictated.

Besides the Fs of the SW1300nd is 44 Hz (45 Hz for the P1200nd) , I highly suggest you're using a 40 Hz high pass for high power applications. Do not cross it at 1K8 Hz either ;)

Best regards Johan

I use the 40hz filter on my amp. Reading my SRHandbook now "Below the cutoff frequency, (in horn loaded systems) the driver diaphragm is no longer loaded by the throat impedance" "Diaphragm will flop in uncontrolled manner causing distortion and premature self destruction." OUCH. Thanks Johan.

Pope from Sweden (Stockholm) Got another 20 cm of snow today...
I am missing the advantages of your modification. Aside from omitting the front handles, you have shortened the length of the cab and increased the baffle angle? what does this do?
Thanks

Hello!
I didn´t like the design from Beyma!
I made the cab shorter when I removed the handles in the front. I mounted steel handles on my cabs.  The rest of the cab is the same as in the orginal plans and there is no alteration of the angle of the baffle. If you add all the angles 75° + 121° + 80° + 84° (6°) you will get 360°.

Its about ready for testing. Loading it with a 18P1200ND. I built it using a circular saw, jig saw and a drill. Lots of sanding and plenty of glue.

My custom feet made with chair leg ends and prong nuts underneath.

I brought it to the club tonight and tried it out. It moves a lot of air!!! Powering it with a qsc plx 3401 bridged mono...specs say 2200w at 8ohm. I gave it about  1/2 to 3/4 power for a few hours then cranked it up just under clipping to finish off the night. It got HOT and my buddy smelled it....I then turned it off and let it cool. It didn't sounded distorted, always gave a clean, very deep bass...but I know that smell.

How many hours should be given to a woofer to "break it in"? I'm scared to give it 2000+ watts again.

Give it a few more hours at that power and the driver will surely BREAK in.
1000w of clip free undistorted power is most that i will go for any driver.

I had higher expectations but now realize that Dub-Step/DnB and bass heavy music is more of a "continuous" signal than a "program" signal when comparing it to how many watts a speaker will take. I was sure the speaker would handle 2000+ watts of ANY sort of music, obviously that was not the case. I also had the xover up to 140hz for that extra kick, the extra 40 made it work that much harder. I'm glad its not damaged.

I plan to build another one and use the plx3401 to power them both. Does this sound unreasonable, leaving some headroom for the amp? I can't wait to hear a pair of them.

what kind of isolation are you putting in?

Did you add support in the corners or just glue/screw the plates together ?

No isolation. There is no support in the corners. I used 18 mm birchply so there is no problem to get the pieces together with glue/screw. In the original plans the bottom and top is reinforced. I´m not so sure if this is necessary. A complete cab is about 50 kg. My 4 HD 15 is 38 kg each with 15" Eminence Kappa LF. I will build two more SB18 with RCF LF18N401. These drivers are cheaper (275 Euro at Thomann)

thanks !

I'm planning to build 2 sb18's with beyma 18p1000nd driver.

I will use 18mm birchply but i thought it would still be necessary to support because of the power this enclosure will have to handle with ?

I'm still looking for some building pic's because i'm interested in ways of construction because of the angled construction of the interior.

Ohw very interesting..! Do you know if any other 18inch eminence speakers would do just fine?

Thanks alot !

Pope, one little (probably stupid) question:

The dimensions in the CAD file are in mm but they're accurate to 1/100 of a mm.

Is there any file with 'sawable' dimensions or may I just round to mm's ?

I'm now adding some more dimensions and corners to the CAD file so I can start making my sawplan end of the week.

1/100 mm! Smile I got the sheets of birchply pre cut at my local lumberyard. 1 mm is OK! It´s not rockets we are building. LOL. I used one side of the cab an draw a 1/1 sketch where all pieces should come. I think this is the most easiest way to get all angles correct if you don´t have a CNC tool of course. I´m using a Festool circlesaw with a ruler

tested my 2 new sb18 cabs with beyma 18P1000nd driver.

Not yet powered at max, my current strongest amplifier can only handle about 600watts/8ohm /channel.

Going to check out some Amcrons MA1200 next week, they would do just fine in bridge mode. 980 watts/amplifier so 1 amplifier for each cab.

However, I tested them at somewhere around 600 watts this weekend...
When standing in front of the cab, it's like a windturbine and definitely really nice bass !

Sims almost exactly like the 18P1200, even cone displacement per watt. The rear chamber volume difference due to different magnets will probably also has negligible effect on the final result. Though the 18P1000Fe has a somewhat lower x-max and 200W less power handling, but it should be fine if not pushed hard and high-passed properly (roughly @35-40Hz).

Just tried to build one of these with 18P1200Nd. First impression was "WTF? this enclosure didn't sounds any like peoples said in this topic" there was lack of low's while played some dubstep (before i used 18P1200Nd in vented box, which played down to ~30Hz). The things are changed when tried to play some house or techno music, especial when i walk about 40m away :) then i get impressed, still no lower than 40Hz but it kicks real nice and the sound presure were realy higher compare to vented enclosure. Now im going to build 2nd enclosure to try... if it fits to me, then i'll put vented away :) Maybe anyone measured how low can go 2 or 4 SB18's? Thanx

The handles are made by penn elcom, they are the large fold-out type that spring back. The cabs put out a tight, crisp, powerful bass. This was at a drum n bass night, they played some dubstep too. I can give them 1000w each but when there's all 4 it's not needed..that's crumbles from the drop ceiling on top.
