Don‘―t go clogging up the rest of the forums with talk of who has the heaviest b line as they isn‘―t interested. Compete with who has the best set and talk about speaker box here only.

If you have scoop and preamp and want to mash up the place, or want to invite other sound to play their set you need to do it in dis section.

Rog Mogale.

Ps‘.. Me scoops are better dan yours. Nuff respect.

Mykey,

Have you ever tired boot polish.

"shouldnt the title be "ROOTS POLITICS" it does exist"

No, it should be whatever I want it to be as its my forum.

I just wanted to give the community a place to chat and clear the air. A place free from the capitalist vultures that have misguided those with so much to lose for so long. Maybe its time some learnt how to look from the shadows into the light.

I also think its better to provoke a reaction though debate than economics, hence this new 'sale free' forum.

How are your designs coming along these days Michael? Let me quickly tell you something this guy called Rog, or was it Roger said to me once. He said, if you think about how much money you will make when designing a speaker, you might design a good one, but it will not have been your heart guiding you head.

Don't lose your way speakerplans, try hard to keep the vampires from the door. They have tasted blood and won't let go.

Loads of love and remember your roots,

Rog Mogale.

i don't know if it was me that caused this but i am not bothered with who is the heaviest or not buying a box from such & such because him down the road bought his stuff from him up the road, i agree with mykey there is to much politics between the (roots sound system man) not the music itself & what i don't understand is these guys are supposed to be righteous & conscious people ???

Nice to hear from you again Rog.

Yeah reggae sound systems are a different kettle of fish as they class the scoop bin as an 'instrament'.  Because of the classic reggae sound it gives for reggae sound systems that its known for,and like effects such as echo, sirens, etc.

And the love of piezos only comes from people who own reggae sound systems. But they quite frankly they sound awful and hurt you ears. No offence but why on earth would a soundsystem want to use tons of piezos that sound awful???? Maybe cos of the low cost, you get piezos in toys for christ sake. Maybe cos piezos are another 'instrament'  in a reggae sound system like scoops are. Just don't make me stand near a bunch of piezos for ages, or I'll be deaf when I'm 40.

Toxic, there are plenty of reggae sound systems that don't use piezos and wouldn't touch them with a barge pole Some of those sound still sound crap but that's not due to the drivers that they use

LOL

If I knew the exact answer then i'd be making soooooo much money (and not giving a penny to the CSA) but I think it's all of the above and more.

Some people are just stuck in thier ways and want to stick to what they know or have so much pride and get defensive if you suggest that there could be room for improvement

Some sounds have no clue about wiring their bass boxes so that they are all in phase (But still pull a massive crowd every year at carnival)

Some know exactly what they want but due to budgets....

And there are those that think that a sound system that sounds just like a hifi (decent balanced frequency response) doesn't sound right

Other sounds blatently push the amps pass what they will deliver cleanly (and pull an even bigger crowd at carinval)

I've heard people pay my preamps and make then sound like sh*t and I've heard others play them better than me

Some sounds concentrate on just playing good tunes and have a wicked vibe

I could go on and on but I'm expecting a delivery and I have some 'papers' to go through

That car 22 certainly gets about!!!

i think a sound system needs piezos to get the right highs, ive heard sounds without them and they havent got the best top section. but some sounds do have to many, but then they run them quieter so they last longer. i think instead of buying loads of cheapies you should get some more expensive ones. look at shaka he would only have a couple of piezos on each stack and he's not missing treble.

Nope titanium bullets or slots do super highs much better then piezos, and sound  much better and don't make your ears ring as much afterwards.

TOXIC why do you hate piezo's so much?

i'll play them to you and you would be shocked, specially off a QUAD 520s / 520f

stop sl*gging them off please, you just havn't heard them right that's all

like i said before if John Meyer use's them in his cab's then they cant be bad

i went to jah tubbys last night  yes tuesday and his tops sound crisp and he uses piezos. it was only a small club and he was using 4 scoops, a double 18 reflex, 4 x 12" mids and about 30 piezos. all speakers were pd's. ill tell you he was rippin.

Piezos always sound like sh*te if used on their own without a filter above 8khz. I heard many stacks with piezos and didn't like the top end on any of them. LOL John Meyer doesn't use piezos strictly on their own, they are used with a filter on a special waveguide. And I recon they must sound like sh*te too. I heard the Community cabs with piezo top end and they sounded sh*te also.

And even piezos on a waveguide with a special filter, like what Cerwin Vega uses in V-252 and the single 15 inch version also. They don't sound that nice either.

You must have been smoking something m8. Cos last time I heard Jah Tubby's with the 30 or so piezos, it hurt my ears, sounded very harsh and my ears were ringing loudly for days afterwards.

Posted By: mskeete
Date Posted: 30 March 2006 at 5:58am

That doesn't mean it was because he was using piezos although I think 30 in one box is too much

I think they can sould OK if crossed over at 4K with some eq or just balanced right with the rest of the speakers.

Could be time for a tweeter shout out (I'll judge from outside the room)

Posted By: Dubaholic

yes my ears ring constant toxic i cant remember not having ringing ears. i do think tubbys has always had to many piezos look at the old boxes shanti had off him but then his tops does sound good once u have got used to it.  tubbys had 4 12s then in the same box 10 piezos that would of been enough but then he had another 2 boxes of piezos which had 10 in each.  i do think  that sounds should run big compression horns and bout 10 piezos or bullets to each big stack. peace

toxic there not ment to be used on there own
if used on there own means without filters?
so you have been using them fullrange have you
did you tell your doctor that when you had your ears tested, how are they now, still sh-te?

id agree...
ive got 48 motorola piezos for when we need to reinforce the big dub sound.....
They get high pass at 5khz, run thru a graphic...and they aint bad..
Clearly i used comp drivers for anything else....
but eh....lets keep it roots!!!

Posted By: norty303

To be honest i've not heard many roots systems but piezos do have a certain crispness and 'crack' to them that i've not heeard from any comp driver, hard to describe but less fizzy and more attack.  Certainly a unique sound and very nice if not overdone/overdriven, although not neccessarily a true representation of the source material - but then thats not always desired!!

Don't think I've heard piezos sound nice. Usually just sounds like white noise over the top of the track. Titanium tweeters sound 'splashy' but I think they have better definition.

OTOH...

One thing that strikes me is that supertweeters only have to cover an octave and a bit, and anything above about 10k is a hiss or a whine to the human ear, so if there's too much of it, it WILL sound harsh.

Rog I've gotta say I'm disappointed, I would've thought someone who's been doing speakers for so long would have the lingua down a bit better than that!

Maybe you need to spend a little less time helping Void make ridiculously good amps and brush up on your patois instead!

I agree! I love both of these types of tweeter, really crisp and nice but don't hurt your ears.
Slots are insanely useful for dispersion also, just aim em so their skimming the crowds heads, jobs a good un

edit: I know some proper techie is gunna say summat about this not necessarily being the case LOL

this is silly

the way the threads work is

first the flers areposted up

then people say if they will go

then the night happens

then the people that went tell us all about the soundsystems and which sounded better?

move it to unmoderated if you want but dont censor it!

While i agree that there are far too many events posted here (and not enough chat) i think some people rely on these type of posts to keep up with who's playing out, good venues, new sounds in the arena etc etc and as HBL pointed out these can start good conversations off. Β

At the very least you could post up some links to sites that allow/encourage for this type of listing and theΒ subsequentΒ chat/discussion.. the Blood & Fire Live events section is a good example:Β  http://www.bloodandfire.co.uk/db/viewforum.php?f=2 - http://www.bloodandfire.co.uk/db/viewforum.php?f=2

maybe its the piezos some sounds are buying why they sound awful... i have the original motorola piezos from the 80's and they sound crystal clear and dont hurt peoples ears...

what type of tweeters do you guys use?Clap

and to me, the sound system ting isn't like how it was back in the days... their was more vibes and ting back then and it wasn't as restricted as it is now. Before, you could play sound system straight till the morning and not get told to lock off by the police or somethingOuch
