Starting to build, looks wonky cus not yet glue probley as this point..Big smile

glued top bottom ect Routered out baffles and port and round over baffles...nice sunny day Big smile

Shot of the close up port, little lip for the grill to seat on...

Sanded down filled holes and rounded over...

Box stained...started to add bracing, and battoning

Box side view stained...

Rear stained and access panel routered out...also a little routered lip around the edge of the rear panel, didnt want it to fit flush, thought it looked more vintage sytle...

Rear of acess panel with the gold cup washer , thought it looked nice touch imho...

Close up shot of top-box with some hf250s for tops, just got to build some mids now to the rectro style of the boxs...gonna be loaded with fane 18b's, so should make some nice noise/tones, as ive said before ive built it for a bit of fun, and on very very limited budget, as its cost me next to nothing to build it with some resorcing 2x2 bracing and battoning ect

from neighbours and friends...and a bit of work to build it...

so all got to do now it router some baffle rings to attach the grills, so the drivers are sealed to the baffles....and get some expanded mesh for the grills and port...

and give it a once over with clear satin varnish...you may not think but it is solid with bracing/battoning from the top/bottom/sides/front so should be good man......also the stain hardens up the exterior, also with a splash of varnish to do still....wadd the rear panel...Job Done!

to all have fun building....may not be the taste for some people man but i love the old style sound boxs...

Nice Retro thing going on there. Are you building a complete system with that look?
I guess if you get fed up with the speakers, it could be turned into a small ticket office or portable cloakroom.

As you are doing external grills, you will have a choice, not sure what I would do though with that style box. You could either do a normal ring with the metal grill or cut  a pattern in the middle to look like S&P's. This was my take on the metal grill cover.

Excellent work, I've always liked Sun Ray shapes, I think they are timeless. I assume you have enough space behind for cone excursion.

Depends drivers and amps you use.

My 15s below (and all the others boxes in my valve rig), use a ring inside, recessed to clear the mesh.

I think you have already got the answer, but to make sure, you could do another loose baffle inside. Including the speaker gasket, depending on whether it's hard or squashy, I would say a 12mm sub baffle will get you out of trouble. It's true, above 100hz you are hardly likely to get any excursion, but it will depend on what sort of safeguards you have in place, i.e. crossover points, whether a bass cable can accidentally be plugged in etc. Not a major problem at this stage.

Looking at these shapes reminds me of a shape I did for some Amp Racks years ago. It was done so that the lids could be kept on while in operation. These shapes would be for ventilation. It was the shape used to depict a Nuclear Device. I Think this would be a great pattern to have on the front of a bass cab.

Just building another double 12" 'Vintage Mid-Range Box' the Vintage Sunray, water and clouds design from the 1930s/40s, all done by hand rough jig-saw no router,

the template was cardboard drawn by my son, all filed down with 2 files round and a flat and some sandpaper, took me bloody hoursBig smile but worth it

got to be sanded down and Wood-Stained and build the rest of the box, thought get the hard/tricky bit out the way first, as yu can flip and turn the front panel with ease

BUT im wondering does any one have any opinions on the percentage opening of this design as there isnt a lot of it really, dont worry about the knots iether tha look lovely when sanded down and stained gives it a great wood effect...imho

is it gonna affect the sound? ie block a lot out?

thanks...

Keep the design as is, but perforate it with drill holes. That way from a distance you will still see the picture

more than 50% you will need

It has taken 25 years to find the amp for me, Shaka's amp and sound of the way he used to play (before he moved to transistors) it was the inspiration. I also appreciate the history of the builder and the original owner. I love the mechanical look of it and the blue pulse of the bottles in the dark...

Looks nice; thanks for sharing an inside shot!

What is your preferred method of mounting the driver from the inside? I see that you used screws and mounting brackets, but how did you secure these to make sure the screws weren't protruding through the front of the cabinet? I've thought of a few ideas but haven't tried any yet, so I'd be interested to any suggestions you'd be willing to offer.

1. Stain/Varnish is Ronseal , Quick dry one, comes out lovely tbh..water based....

2. bro i used just smaller lenghth tbh, works well and wont fall out trust me bee doing it for years bro,

also too add, this box has only a single front baffle, some build ive built are double front baffle, so then you can use wood-inserts 6mm/8mm sandwiched between the 2 baffles,

self leveling too inserts so that fit totaly flush angainst the baffle...

also its not a really beast of a heavy driver iether so it will hold up well, very inefficient loud speaker , and the freq i intend to use it , work well

hope that helps a little

cheers

another little project too
