I've been thinking along the lines of something like this for a while, a kind of 10" version of the MT121 and have finished building a rough prototype tonight.

Compact horn loaded cab with a 10" mid driver with 2" compression driver. I was hoping to post some pictures but the upoloader link doesn't seem to be working.

Anyway, we'll have a listen tomorrow and if it sounds promising, get some measurements done later this week!

T-Bone,

We have a couple of drivers to try. The Kappa 10 Pro and Precision Devices PD.10MH25 although I like the look of the Faital 10PR300 you have there and might order one tomorrow.

As for the 2", I have a couple of P-Audio PreNeo 750Ns here with a P-Audio PH2723 Horn, but am looking for best mix and match really. I have no experience with the BMS comps, so any suggestions are welcome!

JTH I do like the look of you cab.

A BMS 4590 would work well, on a big horn could drop it too 850Hz or so

A mixture really, your sketches certainly inspired me in my quest, so thank you for that Big smile! The other factor was to build something similar to my current MT121s, which have been gigging every weekend for almost 4 years!

The big problem with MT121s I find is the weight, they are hugely heavy and I just wanted something with similar efficiency but smaller and lighter.

You're pumping out a bunch of "designs", are you basing them on theory or ... ?
Just wondering, because they are nice drawings but until someone (ie, you) builds and tests them, or at least sims them, they're just nice drawings Embarrassed

A few were done using hornresp which i had help with but no longer have as i'm no longer in contact with that person hence the reason why i ask on here for help. a few were based on theories that i read up on. only 1 cab (the 15" folded horn) has been built which i still need to go and listen to as well as measure.

So here's two of the four prototypes  we produced. We've changed the comp driver from a 2" to a sweeter sounding 1.4" and gone for a nicer looking horn flare.

We had two out at a small live music festival last weekend and were able to compare directly with our existing MT121s. The difference is astonishing. Apart from being much smaller, about half the weight and a one man lift, the efficiency is much greater.

We'll have four out at a larger live music festival next weekend and can't wait to stretch them a little!

The last picture is the H10 sitting on top of one of our old MT121s, quite a size difference!

Sorry about the poor picture quality and the fact that they got quite scuffed in the back of the van, these are finished in Tuff Cab and I don't think it had long enough to cure properly Smile

I'd put a little more bracing in myself, especially that back wall which is going to be taking the brunt of the drivers output away from the tuning resonance. Probably a whole new side to side panel with nice big holes in it that formed a couple of T shapes with the back wall behind each driver

did you account for any bracing in the design?

for the 1000x500x500 there was one 60x964 and two 60x464. same for the 100x536x600 but the two 60x464 changes to 60x500. not much change in frequency or anything. if you want to add anymore let me know and i'll add it in and see but it shouldn't make too much of a difference depending on size

just a quick thought -  if i wanted to make it trapezoidal, would making the volume, vent area & length the same as a cuboid version result in them being the same?

ok cool....i will prob stick a touch more in and stick a bunch of holes in the braces like a bunch of 40mm holes or the like. any weight saving/extra bracing is always a bonus!.

cheers for the ups! i'll tidy up my lock up and let you know how the 500x500 sounds!

i think it would make a difference as it will be narrower at one end and tapper outwards... im sure theres a guru on here to point out how it makes a difference and how to overcome it.... hopefully.

i think wen doing these type of boxes aim for 100mm width bracing minimum. 60mm isnt bad but with big bass you want big bracing and 100mm is a good start point. been looking over shed loads of other cabs and it seems to be the norm to "go big".

then a little extra off the internal volume for handles too.

and to add roughly a 30-40mm extra to the depth of the cab from the edge to the start of the baffle to account for either a grill or speaker clothe of some type....

ya know for wen your modeling in 3D....

yeah i done that in my 2x18 in the previous page or so. i done 20mm so that 18mm wood then a 1.5mm grill can go over the whole thing so it kind of looks flush

i ment more like this....so you have the ability to have a full face grill not just a speaker grill.

im not picking holes, just a few suggestions for future designs.

try car audio stores.... they give DIY bassers a lot more to play with.

also, PVC piping your can buy in b&q/wilkes is a good bass tube. i used 4" waste pipe (it has a thick wall) in my Q12 and it worked perfectly!

When I used them back in t'day maplin used to have a range. +1 on the pipe though, really easy to trim down on a chop saw until you get the tuning you want.

Be careful running the ports so close to the back panel, it will add a bit of length, just in case you were not aware.
