So ive got 2x 15" drivers out of some turbo reflex boxes we use for a drum fill.

Im debating between buying the drivers or getting the re-cone kits.

Its only worth getting the recone kits if I can do it myself regarding a price point

I have never re-coned a driver before... though I like think I have a sensible approach to and Im not half bad at some other DIY applications.

Seems like a simple driver in a simple box... following a decent set of instructions would anyone deem it unwise to go ahead with the recones myself? Or is something best practiced on a old pile of redundant?

Do the recones.
Its a good learning experience, just be methodical and make sure you have everything you need before you start.
I was lucky as mine were Beyma 18LX60 and the kits were VERY complete, with formers already bonded to cone, and all shims, adhesives and surround treatments included. Others are not so complete.

Thats were the problem is for  alot of DIY re-coning when the formers ' arnt' already bonded to cone, so getting the former/vc at the correct depth....

ie when the kits all in pieces, not made up

the rest seems not to bad tbh, quite simple

Don't forget to factor in the cost of the different glues you need as well as the recone kits. I've just had a recone done, didn't bother to do it myself as it wasn't worth buying all the glue to just do one job that would probably have dried up in the bottle by the time I came to use it again.

For what its worth, the supplied glue for spider and surround appeared to be Evostick Impact adhesive in a plain tube from what i could tell, so not expensive at all.

The cost difference is an extra £50 + VAT per driver as a whole unit.

So providing I can get enough glue cheaper for 2 drivers, I'm happy. As Norty pointed out, Its a valuable experience learnt.

Postage and paying someone to re-cone each would work out similar to buying them as new drivers

Hint, I found a roll of masking tape or suitable size of tape makes a good weight for holding the dust cap in place after applying adhesive. The circle shape provides even pressure all the way around whilst not pressing on the top of the dome.

Yes, that glue gets everywhere!  LOL

As above, if the recone kit comes ready assembled, it´s not to hard. Saying that, I´ve got a guy here that does them for me for around 25€, so hardly worth my time now.  Embarrassed

It does depend also how badly burnt the voice coil is, if you've had a 'minor' issue - you can often get the old voice coil out easily. However if as with the driver I had in last weekend, there was complete meltdown, it can be a major job.

The voice coil and former were so badly burnt I had to use a lot of solvent to just loosen it, then unwind the voice coil as it had expanded below voice coil gap. Took a lot of cleaning before I was even close to considering fitting in a new driver.

If you havent got the right tools to hand, you can waste a lot of time and effort if you're just doing one or two recones.

Brown Evo-stik type glue is common, and works fine for sticking most of it down - but not great for the dust dome (not very pretty either) - I tend to use other glues (2 different types in fact to give a strong joint and tidy finish)

Some recones are trickier than others, if you have all the shims and instructions supplied it tends not to be too hard providing you have some common sense and a decent set of tools, etc

Taking out the old cone and cleaning up can often be more effort and time than fitting the new cone.
