Update:

Fired up the small system today, ran the Mid Tops on their own for the first time without the Tham 12.
Very impressed with the 18 sound horn and comp again.

The fane 8-225 driver plays mid range lovely, but lacks punch or depth below 100hz unless you turn up the gain right up (as expected). These cannot be used on their own without the Tham 12.
I think this may be due to the fane being a fairly budget driver.
Still nonetheless it still puts a huge smile on my face Big smile

Is the box optimised for the fane you've got in it?

Do you think you'd have been better with a 10 inch?

I'm trying to judge what to build for my needs. As much as I suspect the answer is a 12inch mid top I like whatv you've got, tony wilkes q28 and diyxover's own 8 inch top. I just like the compact stuff but unsure it'll do the job.

..pair of void mycro6's? Very loud! And meet my tham12 nicely.

....also for voids are for sale as they don't get used as much as they should these days...

I don't think I would have been better off going with 10" as it was 8" that I wanted. This small system marries up 100% perfectly so going with 10" wouldn't achieve anything.
It puts most 2x sub 2x tops on poles I've heard to shame.

Hi, really lovely looking compact and affordable build...

few questions...

1. Please, can someone link me to a plan for the tops?
2. Could any of this be used as studio monitors for production as well as playing at small parties?
3. Lots of my friends have small systems (2x15" subs 4xtops etc), will this be a good system to add to theirs for bigger parties?
4. What is the minimum specification requirements of amps and crossovers to get.
5. Clearly, I am novice as , it would be good to get links to cables etc.

Bests

THANKS

I used the 8+1 plan on the 18sound website for the tops, used the horn recommended on the plan and a budget fane 8" mid driver. I haven't heard the cab with recommended mid bass driver so I can't suggest if they are suitable for studio use. I would suggest a low tuned box with a silk/ribbon tweeter for a budget studio monitor.

I used a high end Precision Devices driver for my Tham 12 and the cost of CNC machining and finishing of the cabs pushes this system beyond budget. It's just compact and able to knock your head off.

Use an amplifier which is 1.5-2x the wattage of the drivers for plenty of headroom.

I don't do "link ups" with other system, as I value how my kit is treated and how it sounds. So I can't say if they are good for this purpose.

Sorry,

6. What happens if you only build 1 top and 1 sub? WOudl this be uneffective?
7. 18sound have other top models for 12" and 15" tops, can you equate cookie'dj's pait of tops and subs to making only 2 15" tops?
8. Can someone suggest good dacron to buy and application method?
9. Would using 18sound's suggest drivers work better?

Please can you explain this?

Ideally, I am looking for something I can use in my studio and take out for small parties. This might be a dumb proposition?

Hello cookie-dj

Your setup reflects very well what I had in mind regarding how the THAM12 could be deployed, in a compact high performance system that is easy to transport, set up and tune, leaving your mind free to focus on the venue.

I very happy that you feel they meet your needs and I hope that they give you many rewarding experiences, I also want to complement you not only on the system design but also on the very impressive build quality.

thank you for sharing, Br / Anders Martinsson
