Nick - Go Tractrix.

Well you asked for personal opinions :)

We Spent months and months listening to different horn geometries - for our Eclipse Product, and came to the conclusion that the Tractrix variations are by far the best.
If you don't ask you don't get - but be prepared to be told to piss off

i didn't see you're eclipse product on the dare site, amongst the tm symbols and volt driver lookalike (spyderTM), after the 2006 homepage product infringment blog, but without trying to seem provocative, was your testing of oblate spheroids vs tractrix for hifi use or p.a. use?

p.s. sorry if the spyder tm driver is actually a volt driver and the copywrite infringment irony is unnecessary, but what form of os/ how many did you test as not all calculations transform the throat geommetry to waveguide correctly, so assuming you tested a few correct versions for hifi use it's interesting to hear your opinion?

cheers al

The volt driver and the copywrite infringment irony is unnecessary, and uncalled for

As I said this is purely my opinon - the Eclipse product was designed for "Pro" applications and was deployed extensivly - to great effect.

My "Expereriance" was simply being shared with Nick on the subject - "a well designed tractrix horn can give stunning results" IMHO

Chillax Sammy, i assume you havn't lost interest in making tractrix, although maybe OS guides..?

I think we were talking about Biotec and his dilema over what to go for, for which he hasn't made anything afaik, but has got a dog, don't know if he has a home computer yet, so may not reply until back at work..

Lets push this thread slightly.

1. if your going to be sitting bang on axis then the sweet spot of the Tractrix is going to be much better in my opinion, you should benefit from a controlled audio source towards your position over a larger frequency band width.

2. This is a no brainier, i'm sure with the O.S horn you would be looking at something with a diameter of around 25" to hit 400hz (rough guess, correct me if i'm wrong Big smile) Not so much of a problem with the Tractrix horn at around 12" in diameter by 12" in length to hit 400hz. please note there is a lot to be considered with the lower section to make sure the crossover points meet nicely with the O.S.

3. I have been doing some testing with the BMS 4594 and believe me they go very loud before you can hear any distortion (you can quite happily talk to the person next to you when they are turned up), i believe their claim of "extremely low Distortion" This is something you would expect with both types of horns with a coaxial driver of this type. also the BMS is 118db 1w/1m so very little power needed.

4. BMS all the way for me, be careful which one you get thou Wink

This project got parked, although I hope to pick it up again in  a few years. Hopefully by the time I revive the idea, someone will have completed a successful DIY project which I can shamelessly copy.
me so horny, me love you long throw.

For anyone interested in tractrix horns, there is some information in the Wireless World series of articles on horns by J Dinsdale (from about 1974). Rather than a spreadsheet, there used to be a free program called HornCalc which calculated the profile of tractrix horns. Finally the most thorough article I have seen was Acoustical Studies of the Tractrix Horn by R Lambert (from about 1955).

Try your favourite search engine, it might come up with something on the above.

p.s. admins, is it possible to have a proper English spell checker.

looking into documents by voight and bruce edgar should also turn up some information on
the tractrix curves.....

I dig them for home use, and have some acoustic lens horns to use for 'party' type situations...
(with different XO points, etc)
