What is it!?
Google patent search yields no joy. Is it some sort of phase plug, or just a specific horn design? Despite having mixed on them many times, I've never actually looked inside a TSW-718 and was wondering what the differences were between them and the F218 mk1

the TurboBass™
device, a unique patented design which employs a high-velocity partial horn loading technique, giving precise cone control at high power levels. That's all I could find. |

Probably just a trade mark for the band pass horn loading technique. The newer F1 bins I assume, are an evolution of the same principle.

Ah I read that one. I suppose trademarks are separate to patents aren't they?

I mean I read the patent without realising it was the 'Turbo Bass Device'. The name is a trademark, the idea is the patent

+1 It was just a marketing name for a clever, but very simple, design. |

I've always thought the Turbo Bass Device was the same thing as what we now call a "bandpass horn". There's usually a large compression/decoupling chamber and a short, non-ideal horn flare that can have some highly damped helmholtz resonance action (in the narrow section of the horn where the air mass is most free to vibrate like the air mass in a reflex port) happening at the same time. Essentially it is a different embodiment of a horn, and I don't see how the patent would be enforceable, at least in the United States (unless Turbosound - that is, Proel - has lots and lots of money to work the system.)

Acording to John Newsome, who I asked about the TSW 721 and the F218 at Plasa one year, the original 2x18 for the Floodlight system was the same shape/size/design as the F218. However this was physicaly narrower than the Flood top box, and the man at Turbo wanted it to be the same size. They re-designed it, and made the box bigger and called it the TSW 721. Thats what I was told anyway.

The TSW 718 is a 2x18 The F218 is a 2x18 The TSW721 is a 1x21 I think you missunderstood John (Newsham) In answer to the OP the "Turbo Bass Device" is a loading technique-but fundamentaly its marketing spin.. |
